Chery to recall 54,000 cars after Malaysia incident
Chinese carmaker Chery recalls 53.8 thousand.
Chinese carmaker Chery recalls 53.8 thousand cars due to a defect in the welding of the rear axle. This was reported by the State Administration for Market Regulation of the PRC (SAMR).
The recall campaign will begin on November 27. Under it fall models Tiggo 5x and Omoda series, produced from June 6, 2022 to December 31, 2023. The manufacturer will check the production date codes and replace the rear axles free of charge if they belong to a defective batch.
“In some vehicles subject to this recall campaign, welding of the rear axle lever and sleeve may be poor due to a manufacturing defect. In extreme cases, the weld seam in this place can collapse and peel off, which will increase the risk of an accident, the press service of the state administration explained.
The recall of nearly 54,000 vehicles is the company’s reaction to an incident in Malaysia on October 6, when the 2023 Omoda 5 suddenly detached its rear axle while driving. No one was injured in the incident. Chery, together with the Department of Road Transport of Malaysia, conducted an investigation, which revealed a design defect.
The company recalled 8,878 Omoda 5 vehicles to inspect and replace components. Chery Chairman Yin Tongyue apologized for the incident.
