Over the past 15 years, the number of abortions registered in Russia has decreased fourfold - from 1 million to 235.7 thousand. For 100 births, their number decreased three times - from 56 to 20. This was reported by Vedomosti with reference to data from Rosstat, the Ministry of Health and expert assessments. Russia has become the world leader in reducing the relative number of abortions.
Vedomosti notes that over the past 15 years, abortions have become more common in the world and births have decreased. The number of abortions in the hundred largest countries in the world has increased from 49 million to 54 million. Relative to the natural movement of the population, this figure increased by 27% - from 41 to 51 per 100 births. Russia’s abortion rate per 100 births has shifted from 93rd to 30th among the world’s largest economies.
The newspaper writes that in Russia at the same time 1.5 times increased the rate of miscarriages. In 2025, the share of miscarriages among all pregnancies in Russia reached 12% compared to 6% in 2010. Last year, they accounted for about 44 percent of all abortions. In 2010, this figure was at 15%. For 100 births in 2025, there were 15.8 miscarriages against 10.1 15 years earlier.
The decline in the number of abortions in the country was affected by the widespread use of contraceptives and the planning of childbirth, Vedomosti notes. In addition, additional measures of support from the state, including consultations of doctors, social workers, lawyers, “week of silence” and motivational questionnaires, had an impact. The Ministry of Health told the newspaper that in 2025, after counseling, the Russians saved 46 thousand pregnancies.
