The Frankfurt Health Authority reported two new cases of tropical malaria in the Schwanheim area. It is located near Frankfurt Airport, where an outbreak of the infectious disease occurred in August. However, this time, both patients do not work at the airport and have not visited areas where malaria is common.
The health authority urged residents to wear clothes covering most of the body and use repellents. The risk of contracting malaria in Frankfurt is assessed as extremely low. Malaria is not transmitted from person to person, infection occurs when a mosquito bites.
At the end of August, it became known that six employees of Frankfurt airport were infected with malaria. Two of them died. Then it was reported that they contracted malaria after mosquito bites that hit the airport from the cargo compartment of the aircraft.
According to the Robert Koch Institute, the majority of malaria cases recorded in Europe are people who have contracted elsewhere. Between 1969 and 2024, there were 145 cases of malaria in Europe.
