In England, women with incurable breast cancer will have access to a life-extending cancer drug under the NHS's national insurance scheme. According to The Guardian, this became possible after the government and drug manufacturers agreed on a price.
We are talking about the drug "Enchertu" (trastuzumab derucstekan) from AstraZeneca for patients with HER2-positive breast cancer. Clinical trials have shown that compared to conventional chemotherapy, it nearly doubles median progression-free survival to 9.9 months. Overall survival also increased by 6.6 months. Breast Cancer Now called the decision a "significant day" for thousands of people.
Previously, the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in England did not include the drug in the list of insurance drugs due to the high cost. The medicine has been available in Scotland since December 2023.
The Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation also recently recommended to include Encherta in the list of vital drugs (VED) for breast cancer of this type. The maximum price for packaging 100 mg is 55 thousand rubles.
