The Ministry of justice of Russia proposed to reduce from 30 to 10 days the term of recognition of convicted malicious evaders. The relevant draft amendments to the Criminal Code were published for public discussion on October 2.
The document provides for the same reduction of the term for those who evade the course of medical and social rehabilitation, which gives a deferment from serving their sentence. In addition, 10 days for confession will be given to probationary convicts who have escaped control or failed to fulfill the duties imposed by the court. If a convicted person evades serving a sentence or from undergoing a course of anti-drug treatment, an application is sent to the court to replace the unserved term in the form of imprisonment. So, instead of correctional work or treatment, a citizen can be sent to a colony or prison.
In addition, the Ministry proposes to fix that convicted to forced labor and imprisonment in the colony-settlement can live with their family within the correctional center, but provided that they do not have penalties.
The explanatory note to the bill notes that the amendments are aimed at “reducing the rate of repeated crime.”.
