Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Technical Sciences, developer of electric rocket engines (ERD) of the new generation Garry Popov has died at the age of 91 years. This was reported by the press service of the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI).
Garry Popov led theoretical, design and experimental research aimed at creating ERD: in such engines, thrust is created by accelerating electrically charged particles, which allows them to consume less fuel. “All this formed the basis for the development of highly efficient electric rocket propulsion systems for modern spacecraft,” the university added.
Harry Popov graduated from MAI in 1959, first worked as an assistant of the department. He defended his thesis for the degree of Doctor of Technical Sciences in 1982, five years later he headed the State Research Institute of Applied Electrodynamics MAI. He became an academician of the RAS in 2008.
