Elephant Caves Elephant Caves is a complex of cave temples included in the UNESCO World Heritage List and dedicated mainly to the Hindu god Shiva. There are five Hindu caves on the island, several Buddhist stupas (dating back to the second century BC) and two Buddhist caves with water tanks. In the caves of Elephant there are stone sculptures carved in the rock (mainly high reliefs), demonstrating the syncretism of Hindu and Buddhist ideas and iconography. The sculptural compositions illustrate Hindu legends; among them the most famous are the monumental sculptures of Trimurti Sadashiva (three-faced Shiva), Nataraji (lords of dance) and Yogeshvara (lords of yoga).
