Under the document, each applicant will receive a lump sum of at least $ 250 thousand. Also, the archdiocese is obliged to disclose the names of clergymen who are accused of violence and regularly update the list on the website.
To finance the payments, the archdiocese cut the operating budget by 10% and sold some of the property. Among those sold were the headquarters and land in eastern Manhattan.
In late September, Pope Leo XIV highlighted the work of French bishops to counter child abuse in the church and urged them to remain vigilant. During a 4-day visit to France, he met 7 survivors of sexual abuse by the clergy in Lourdes.
According to them, this happened in parishes, boarding schools, religious communities and church movements. Concluding the meeting, the pontiff thanked them for their hard testimonies and stressed that it is important to do everything so that what they experienced does not happen again.
