Church holiday September 21, 2026: signs, traditions and prohibitions on Christmas of the Most Holy Mother of God
On September 21, 2026, Orthodox believers celebrate one of the main holidays of the church year – the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin of our Mother of God and the Virgin Mary

History of the holiday
According to Church Tradition, the Blessed Virgin Mary was born in Nazareth from pious parents Joachim and Anna. For many years they were childless and prayed to God for the child, promising to dedicate him to the service of the Lord. Their prayers were answered: they had a daughter, whom they named Mary. From this moment begins the story of the salvation of mankind.
The feast of the Nativity of the Virgin was established by the Church in the first centuries of Christianity. In Russia, it began to be celebrated immediately after taking baptism. On this day, believers thank God for all gifts and ask for intercession from the Most Holy Mother of God.
Why is the day called Autumn
The people of September 21 called Osenins, because by this time the harvest was completed and the real autumn came. The peasants thanked the land for the harvested bread and celebrated autumn. They celebrated widely: they covered rich tables, baked pies from the flour of a new harvest, invited guests.
Autumn was celebrated for several days. Young families went to visit their parents, and they treated them and gave advice on the household. It was believed that if the autumn table is rich, then the next year will be full.
Traditions of the Nativity of the Virgin
The main tradition of the holiday is to attend church services. Believers pray to the Most Holy Mother of God for the health, family well-being and protection of children. On this day, it is also customary to help those in need, give alms and do good deeds.
In Russia on this day organized festive festivities. People sang songs, danced, played folk games. The hostess baked bread and pies, cooked compotes and jelly. Honey, fresh vegetables and fruits were placed on the table.
Special attention was paid to newlyweds: they were visited by relatives to see how their family life was arranged. It was believed that if a young wife receives guests well, then in the house she will be fine.
