The number of refuseniks from the army has increased significantly

The number of citizens withdrawing applications for military service is growing in Germany. This is reported by RND with reference to the representative of the Federal Office for Family and Civil Society Affairs.

In the first eight months of 2026, the department received 570 applications to renounce the status of a conscious refusenik. For the year, the figure is projected to reach 855, surpassing the data of 2025, when 781 applications were withdrawn.

The representative of the department explained that it is enough to send a signed statement to refuse. After that, the applicant is no longer legally considered to have withdrawn from service.

Earlier, the department reported that the number of applications for refusal of service is also growing. By the end of August, more than 12,000 such applications had been received - three times more than for the whole of 2025.
