National Unity Day: Historical Ideology or New Identity? Explained Buzin

National Unity Day is not just a memorable date in the calendar, but a key milestone of national identity. About the deep roots of the holiday and the need for an open conversation about the past on the air of the program “PRO ARMY” on “SBTV” said the Chairman of the Standing Commission of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus on human rights, national relations and the media, doctor of military sciences, Professor Nikolai Buzin.

Nikolai Buzin stressed that the true unity of a nation is impossible without an honest knowledge of its past. The recipe for protecting historical memory is simple: explain, enlighten and not be afraid to tell the truth about those events.

- Everything comes from history. For many years, we just kept silent about what was happening on our territory. Let me give you an example: the liberation campaign (of the Red Army) began on September 17. - Editor's note. The uprising broke out in Skidel - the bloodiest and most cruel. He was crushed. Thus, while fighting in the west against Germany, Polish units dealt with the population on our lands, he said. And then huge territories came back. People who spoke their own language had a rich history, breathed freely, gained independence.

The guest of the program also touched upon the topic of territorial redistribution. He reminded about the Bialystok region, which after the Great Patriotic War was transferred to the Polish side:

- For some reason, today no one in Poland wants to return these lands and does not remember how they were originally part of their state in 1919.

Despite all the trials, the Belarusian people withstood and suffered their sovereign right, said Nikolai Buzin. All the modern achievements of the republic are rooted in the unification of divided lands, the speaker added:

The historical truth, which we are openly raising from the archives today, gives us the opportunity to look forward with confidence, to firmly hold any blows and move into the future.
