St. John’s Day of Remembrance: What You Can and Cannot Do on October 9
On October 9, Orthodox Christians celebrate the day of the repose of the Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian - one of the closest disciples of Christ and the author of the Gospel, the Book of Revelation and the three epistles

History of the holiday
John the Theologian was the son of the fisherman Zebedee and, together with his elder brother Jacob, became one of the twelve apostles. He was one of the closest disciples of Christ: he was present at the resurrection of Jairus’ daughter and at the Transfiguration of the Lord. At the foot of the Cross, Jesus instructed John to take care of the Virgin Mary.
He received the nickname Theologian because in his Gospel he called Christ the Word of God. John lived about 100 years and was the only apostle to die. For preaching love as the highest virtue, he is called the Apostle of Love. The saint is considered the patron saint of artists, icon painters and all creative people, as well as travelers.
