“House of care with sanatorium conditions”: how the boarding house of Buda-Koshelevsky district changes the approach to caring for people

Everyone under supervision and in good hands is the main principle of the work of the Uvarovichi social boarding house “Lugovoy” of the Buda-Koshelevsky district. And this concern is proved here by real deeds. Today, after a large-scale reconstruction, a new food block was opened, connected by warm galleries with residential buildings. But behind the updated walls is a much deeper change: here they change the very idea of what the life of those who need special care should be like.

Galleries instead of the street New food block - the central object of reconstruction. It was built so that he connected two residential buildings with warm galleries. Now guests do not need to go outside to get to lunch: the space is heated, so it is warm in any season. The dining room is decorated with attention to detail - it looks more like a cozy cafe than a standard dining room of a social institution.

- At the same time, the main thing remained unchanged: care for people who especially need attention and support. Today, 129 people live here. The average age is 60. Each of them has its own destiny, its own history. And our task is to make sure that the future life of these people was worthy. The new food block is an important part of this work, Ivan Krupko said.

- Today we have for lunch - a salad of fresh vegetables, brine "Leningrad" with sour cream, mashed potatoes with meat patty and a compote of dried fruits. And for afternoon - buns with cinnamon and cocoa with milk.

The head of the region separately emphasized that all the work was done without resettlement of people – the boarding house continued to live its normal life while the reconstruction was underway.

Order was brought not only inside, but also around. The territory is buried in flowers, and in the green zone there is a small pond with a fountain - the guests themselves equipped it with their own hands. For a boarding house, such strokes have long been no wonder: people treat it as their home.

- We are constantly changing our approach to social institutions. It is not enough for us to provide a person with only care. We need to create an atmosphere in which he is as comfortable as possible. Therefore, we strive to ensure that our social boarding houses in terms of living conditions, nutrition, medical support, rehabilitation and leisure are increasingly close to good sanatorium conditions, Ivan Krupko emphasized.

Part of the residential building, where the food block used to be located, will be repurposed next year. There will be premises for social rehabilitation and habilitation, labor workshops and places for circle work.

- This is a very important direction. After all, care is not only to help a person in time, but also to give him the opportunity to be active, communicate, do business, feel his need. It is from such decisions that modern social policy is formed, the chairman of the regional executive committee emphasized.

In the Gomel region there are 15 social boarding houses, in which more than 3,5 thousand people live. Modernization of Lugovoy is part of systematic work to improve the quality of life of people in need of special care and support.
