The international humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has warned of a sharp deterioration in the situation with Ebola in the North Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of Congo. According to the organization, the spread of the infection in the region is out of control, reports Africanews.
North Kivu now accounts for nearly 40% of all new confirmed cases in the country. Many new infections are associated with unknown chains of transmission.
Stephanie Hoffmann, coordinator of MSF's Ebola treatment centre in Butembo, said about 75% of deaths from the disease occur in communities, meaning people die at home and do not seek medical care. This increases the risk of further spread of the virus to relatives and other residents.
The organization also noted that new centers appear almost every week, and medical facilities in North Kivu are working at their limits. According to the latest WHO data as of 23 September, 7,890 confirmed cases of Ebola have been reported in the DRC, including 3,799 deaths. North Kivu accounted for 1,480 cases, with a fatality rate of 59.7 per cent in the province.
