Euclid Curdzidis will open the first Greek theater in Rostov

In Rostov-on-Don in September 2027 it is planned to open the first Greek theater. The initiator and further artistic director will be an actor of theater and cinema, Honored Artist of Russia, Professor Euclid Kurdzidis. The venue is designed for 500-600 spectators, will unite the stage, exhibition hall, children's film and theater studio, creative workshops. In an exclusive comment on “MK on the Don”, the actor said that he would wait for the viewer in a new cultural space.

The idea of the theater largely grew out of the pedagogical work of the artist. Euclid Kurdzidis for the fourth year leads the acting workshop of the Rostov-on-Don branch of VGIK. In a recent interview with MK on the Don, Euclid Kiriakovic spoke about the difficult teaching of acting skills to students and how in a short time each of the 26 students became close to him.

- Their training is coming to an end, says the master. It is important for each of them to have their own professional destiny. Will they work in the theater? Will they go to the movies? These thoughts made me think about creating my own theater, where my students can realize themselves as professional actors.

Rostov’s historical connection with Greek culture plays a key role in the design. At the beginning of the III century BC Greek colonists from the Bosporan kingdom founded Tanais, located 40 kilometers from the Don capital. This city was an important trading center of its time.

Relations are maintained and developed to this day.

“Given this historical feature, Rostov-on-Don needs Greek theater,” says the actor. Especially in the city of a million, all five state theaters and four youth theaters are very few. And it gave me suddenly such hope that Greek theater would be in demand.

The name of the theater will receive a symbolic name, which is kept secret. As assured by the artist, the posters will be all world drama, uniting all this will be Greek and ancient and modern drama. Part of the repertoire will consist of productions that students of the workshop of Kurdzidis already play on youth stages, such as Hanuma and Baron Munchausen by Gorin. In some performances, they plan to involve guest stars from the capital, whose names have not yet been disclosed.

The theater will be located in one of the mansions of the historical center. Organizers promise to reveal the exact address later. The plans include not only the premiere seasons, but also educational programs: master classes, creative laboratories and open rehearsals for young people.

Euclid Kurdzidis lives and works in Moscow, actively tours and has been holding the Crystal Spring Film Festival in Essentuki for nine years. Despite the busy schedule, the artist pays special attention to the project in Rostov.
