Theophanes the Merciful: the church holiday of October 12, 2026, signs, traditions, what can and cannot be done
October 12, 2026 the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the Monk Theophanes the Merciful

History of the holiday
There is little information about the life of Theophanes. It is known that he lived in the Palestinian city of Gaza and was a man of wealth, but very kind. Theophanes received strangers in his home, shared food and care with them. By old age, he became impoverished, and then seriously ill - the body was covered with festering wounds. The saint endured his suffering steadfastly and humbly.
Before his death, he comforted his wife, who was crying that she would not be able to bury her husband because of the storm: Do not cry, the ordeal has still been going on, but here comes the pardon. At the hour of my death the storm will cease.” That's what happened. And four days after his death, Theophans appeared to a man and asked him to roll off the tombstone on his grave. When this was done, people felt a wonderful fragrance, and the relics of the saint began to exude myrrh, healing the sick.
Traditions of Theophanes the Merciful
The main tradition of the day is to help those in need. In memory of the saint who shared the latter, people tried to show mercy: to feed the beggar, to give alms, to support the one who was in trouble.
The hostess baked cakes and pancakes, treating their neighbors and guests. It was believed that the more you give, the more you will return.
On this day, they warmed the house: they closed the cracks, checked the stoves and stocked up firewood. Prepared for the winter thoroughly - believed that Theophan would tell what it would be.
Also on Feofan it was customary to drown the bath and steam. It was believed to promote health and protect against colds throughout the year.
