This autumn, Russians have a great chance to catch the Northern Lights, and not only in the Far North. Sergey Bogachev from IKI RAS and ISZF SB RAS explained where in the current season we should expect the appearance of auroras.
The list of priority locations for observing this natural phenomenon included Karelia, Murmansk and Arkhangelsk regions, as well as the vicinity of St. Petersburg. Stably high chances to see the “heavenly show” are maintained by residents of the northern Siberian territories, in particular near Norilsk.
The scientist stressed that with high solar activity, the boundaries of visibility of the aurora significantly expand, covering even the central and southern regions of the country. However, it is more difficult for citizens to see this phenomenon: light pollution and features of human vision interfere, which is less sensitive to dim glow than modern cameras.
