Today, Russia celebrates the Day of Military Glory - the Day of the defeat by Soviet troops of the German fascist invaders in the battle for the Caucasus. On this date, the residents of the republic congratulated the head of Ingushetia Mahmud-Ali Kalimatov.
The Battle of the Caucasus lasted 442 days, from July 25, 1942 to October 9, 1943. The German plan to capture the region called Edelweiss provided for the capture of the Caucasian oil fields, which were of strategic importance for the economy and defense of the USSR. However, the enemy did not achieve his goals. Together with the victory at Stalingrad, the defeat of the German fascist troops in the Caucasus became the most important stage of the radical change in the Great Patriotic War. About 870,000 people were awarded the medal “For the Defense of the Caucasus”.
A special place in the history of the battle is the defense of Malgobek. There were fierce battles, in which the Soviet soldiers showed steadfastness and stopped the advance of the enemy. For the mass heroism of the defenders of the city of Malgobek, the Decree of the President of Russia Vladimir Putin was awarded the honorary title “City of Military Glory”.
“In the defense of the Caucasus, a worthy place is occupied by the feat of natives of Ingushetia, who fought with courage and dedication for the freedom and independence of our Motherland,” Kalimatov said.
The head of the republic stressed that the memory of the heroes is carefully preserved in the region. According to him, the duty of the current generation is to pass it on to the youth, to cultivate respect for the history of the country and the feat of ancestors.
