What is the holiday today: October 26, 2026

In Russia, October 26 is not an official public holiday or a day off.

On this day, a number of church, departmental and unofficial dates are celebrated, including Orthodox celebrations, professional and national memorable days.

In everyday tradition, the date is associated with the “bath everyday life”: in Russia on this day, healing herbs were brought to the baths and infusions were “expelled” from patients.

On October 26, 1956, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was established – today this date is widely celebrated in the international expert community.

In 1978, the WHO announced the eradication of the smallpox virus in nature – an event remembered as an important milestone in the history of world medicine.

In the national calendar, the day is called Agathon (Agafonnik).

By this day, the blanks were completed and the “winter” troubles began: the weather judged the coming winter.

Bathing: on this day in the baths brought different medicinal herbs and “drived” from the patients of the disease.

On the shelf of the heated bath, infusions of medicinal herbs were left - it was believed that they should "ban" there.

Traditionally, the day was considered successful for herbal treatment and cleansing the body.

The highlights of the day:

The names of October 26 celebrate Anton, Benjamin, Innocent, Karp, Nikita, Nikolai, Trofim, Jacob, Zlata and others. Don't forget to congratulate your loved ones!

Saint Meletius (Pigasus, 1549–1601) was Patriarch of Alexandria, one of the most prominent Greek church figures of the era of the Turkish conquest. His memory is celebrated on October 26. He was born on the island of Crete, received a brilliant education in Italy, accepted monasticism and went from the abbot of the monastery to the primate of the Church of Alexandria, devoting his life to the defense of Orthodoxy and opposition to proselytism.

Origin and education

Meletius Pigasus was born in 1549 in Crete. At an early age, he showed brilliant ability to study. His initial training was with Meletius Vlastos, after which his parents sent his son to Venice, and then to the University of Padua. There he was offered a promising career as a professor of theology, but he refused to accept the decisions of the Council of Florence. Returning to his homeland, Meletius chose monastic life in the Angaraf monastery, where he was zealous in prayer and showed obedience in all matters of community life. Having accepted monasticism, he opened a school of ancient Greek at the monastery, which became very famous.

Beginning of church service

Soon, at the request of his compatriots, Meletius took over the leadership of the Greek school. Not content with teaching, he instilled in his disciples and locals a fiery devotion to the Orthodox faith, which was threatened by the Latin invaders. After some time, the abbot of the Angaraf monastery Sylvester was elevated to the rank of Patriarch of Alexandria, and instead of him in 1569, the abbot was elected Meletius. His zeal for the defense of Orthodoxy soon aroused hatred among the Catholic clergy, which succeeded in removing the saint.

After leaving Crete, Meletius went to a monastery in Sinai and peacefully asceticized there for some time. When a new patriarch was to be elected in Jerusalem, Patriarch Sylvester arrived in the holy city. He persuaded Meletius to help him run the Church of Alexandria as a protosinkella and epithrope. Disillusionment and decay of spirit prevailed among Christians at that time, since the Church was oppressed from the outside by the Turks and corrupted from the inside by unworthy clergy. Despite this, the saint began to work, mainly through preaching, to establish the flock in faith and in the principles of Christian morality. He also tried to attract Copts to Orthodoxy who did not obey the decisions of the Council of Chalcedon, but to no avail. Meletius revived monastic life by establishing an exemplary community in the monastery of St. Sava in Alexandria, and founded a theological school there.

Combating Latin Proselytism

At first open to the rapprochement of the Churches for the purpose of unification, Meletius encountered the proselytism of the Latins, who opened schools and charitable institutions to attract suffering Orthodox. He began to write theological treatises against the dogmatic deviations of Catholics, such as the "filioque" and the primacy of the pope, and against their attempts to impose the Gregorian calendar. He maintained more friendly relations with Protestants (reformats), without making any concessions in matters of doctrine, and conducted theological correspondence with the theologians of Tübingen, which allowed him to hope for rapprochement.

In 1582, the saint went to Cairo, where he successfully worked to restore church life. Two years later he was invited to Russia to take over the translation of the Acts of the Council of Florence. Having made a stop at Constantinople, he stayed there for a while, because he was begged to stay in order to strengthen the Christians by preaching. Meletius worked on the construction of the Church in Constantinople for four years (1584-1587) and witnessed how the Turks took away the Patriarchal Church of the Virgin Pammakaristos from the Orthodox. Despite enormous difficulties, he managed to prevent the proselytism of the Jesuits and to return Jeremiah from exile.

Patriarchate at the Alexandrian Cathedral

The planned mission to Russia again met with obstacles, as Meletius was summoned to Rhodes by the seriously ill Patriarch Sylvester. The Primate suggested that Meletius take the throne of the Apostle Mark instead. Refusing humility, the saint finally agreed to return to Egypt as an exarch, with all the powers of the patriarch. After the death of Sylvester, despite the resistance of Meletius himself, he was elevated to the rank of Patriarch of Alexandria on August 5, 1590. The whole people welcomed the good shepherd who was ready to give his life for his lambs.

Having occupied the primate see, Metropolitan Meletios was faced with the problem of the patriarchate’s enormous debt to the sultan, as well as with proselytism on the part of the Jesuits, against which he took a firm stand. First of all, the new patriarch made every effort to free the Church from debts to Jews and Turks, and managed to obtain from the sultan a decree preventing the seizure of church property.

The activity of the saint was not limited to the Church of Alexandria, but extended to the entire Orthodox world. In 1593, he again went to Constantinople to attend the Council that approved the creation of the Moscow Patriarchate, and played a prominent role in restoring canonical order. From there he went to Chios, where he brilliantly defended Orthodoxy. As soon as he could return to Alexandria, the saint was summoned to Constantinople to resolve certain canonical and pastoral questions. He even thought of traveling to Russia and Poland to fight against the Jesuits and Uniatism, but being unable to do so because of the duties of the patriarch, sent his cousin Cyril Lukaris there and sent letters to the Churches of these States, encouraging them to establish schools and printing houses to oppose the proselytism of the Latins.

Support for Orthodoxy in Western Russia and ties with Moscow

Meletius took a particularly keen part in the affairs of Orthodoxy in Western Russia and Poland, on which he wrote most of his letters and letters. Convinced to remain firm in Orthodoxy, he wrote to many zealots of enlightenment, for example, Prince Ostrog, Vishnevetsky, Quartetinsky, as well as to King Sigismund III of Poland and to the Western Russian brotherhoods. Regarding the establishment of a patriarchate in Moscow, Meletius wrote to Tsar Feodor Ioannovich, Boris Godunov and Patriarch Job. All his life he spent in the struggle against the papacy and the preparing union, uttered a lot of sermons and teachings, which constituted a collection of conversations - στρόματα.

The throne of Constantinople and recent years

Like Saint Basil and the great confessors of the past, Meletius cared for all the Churches, which at that time were subjected to numerous trials. His actions earned him such respect that after the death of Patriarch Jeremiah, he was considered the only worthy candidate for the throne of Constantinople (1596). The saint again humbly rejected this offer, and the Christians of Egypt announced that they would not allow them to be deprived of their pastor under any circumstances. Since the newly elected Patriarch Gabriel died soon after, Metropolitan Theophan of Athens temporarily took his place and even became Patriarch, but he died two months later (1597). In response to the demands to move to Constantinople, Meletius agreed to govern this Church only as a locum tenens, hoping that one of his two friends and associates, Gabriel Sevir or Maximus Margunius, would be elected as a result.

During the two years that he performed these duties (1597-1598), the saint managed to improve the economic situation of the Church and ensure the reasonable management of it. He showed the same zeal in the struggle against simony among the clergy and restored Christian morals, continuing to fight for the defense of Orthodoxy. Having completed his work and wishing to return to Alexandria, the saint traveled through Chios for the last battle with the Latins. Sick and weary of many hard labors for the protection of the Church, Saint Meletius departed to the Lord at the age of only fifty-two, on September 13, 1601. He died in Alexandria on 12 (22) September 1601.

Saint Meletius was a worthy heir to the great confessors of the era of the Holy Fathers. He became famous for constancy in true faith and zeal in maintaining church life during the period of gloomy enslavement. St. Meletius Pigasus is considered the most brilliant Greek patriarch of the era of the Turkish conquest. His memory is celebrated by the Orthodox Church on October 26. During his life he went from a modest monk and abbot of a monastery in Crete to the Primate of the Church of Alexandria, a fighter against the Unia and defender of Orthodoxy in Western Russia and Poland, an active participant in the Council of Constantinople in 1593, who contributed to the establishment of the Patriarchate in Moscow.

Martyr Florentius the Solunian was an early Christian saint who suffered for his faith in the second century. He was born in Thessaloniki and became famous as a zealous preacher of Christianity, fearlessly denouncing paganism. For his preaching he was captured by the pagans, subjected to severe torment and burned at the stake. The memory of the saint is celebrated on October 26 (October 13 according to the old style).

Origin and Jealousy of Faith

The Holy Martyr Florentius was a native of the city of Soluni. As a Christian and zealous of true piety, he fearlessly denounced the darkness of idolatry and led many to the light of true God-knowledge. He taught faith in Christ and the fulfillment of the will of God, affirmed in it Christians and urged them to obey the commandments of the Lord. Jealous of the glory of God, Florentius condemned and denounced faith in false pagan gods and cursed their service.

Judgment and confession of faith

For his preaching, the saint was taken to trial before the head of that country. During the interrogation, he openly confessed his faith in the Lord our God Jesus Christ, and called the pagan gods wood, stones, gold, silver, copper and iron — soulless and senseless idols. Thus he infuriated the ruler of that country and was condemned by him to punishment.

Martyrdom

The saint was subjected to a cruel beating, his body was torn with sharp tools, after which he was thrown on a large fire bonfire burned under him. In this fire the martyr died with joy, praying and thanking God. The death of the confessor followed in the I-II century, and according to other sources - in the II century.

The memory of the Holy Martyr Florence is celebrated on October 13 in the old style and on October 26 in the new style. Iconographic images of the saint are known, for example, the fresco of the Martyr Florentius of Thessalonians in 1547 in the monastery of Dionysiat on Mount Athos.

In Russia, October 26 was called Agathonov (or Karpov) day, as well as “bath everyday life” – the date was associated with the memory of the martyrs of Karp, Papila, Agafodor and Agathonika and with the celebration of the Iberian Icon of the Mother of God, which was popularly called the Gatekeeper or Gatekeeper. The main custom of the day was to visit the bath: it was hotly melted, new brooms and healing herbal infusions were prepared, which, according to legend, helped to “expel” the sick and cleanse the body and soul. On the shelf of the heated bath, infusions of herbs were left, so that they “preserved” there, and when leaving, they certainly left a bathtub at least a piece of soap, a washcloth or a towel - as a sign of respect for the bath spirit, so that the next time the bathtub took the same warmth.

The housewives on this day arranged general cleaning, believing that cleanliness in the house attracts good luck and happy events: washed windows and floors, cleaned the bathroom and stove, changed old boards, rearranged furniture and supplemented the interior with new decor. Single girls went to church and prayed before the Iberian icon for a good groom, believing that the request would come true, and the peasants prayed for fertility and a good harvest. The day was considered favorable for good deeds - alms to the poor, help to strangers and needy - and in the evening families gathered for a quiet feast, often with fish dishes, especially from carp, a symbol of prosperity and the peaceful completion of autumn.

Many prohibitions were also associated with the day: they did not quarrel and did not start conflicts so as not to bring a “black strip”, did not boast about successes and did not talk about plans and dreams - especially in the bath, where, according to legends, the bannik could spoil everything. Beware of strangers to avoid becoming a victim of fraud, did not give or borrow, did not make large purchases and did not leave valuables unattended, and warmly dressed and avoided drafts, believing that the cold caught on October 26, will not recede for a long time. According to the weather, they judged winter: red clouds foreshadowed rain, white frost foreshadowed precipitation, and mushrooms that reappeared in the forest - a long autumn without snow.

In Russia, October 26, 2026 is a full moon, and the moon is in a waning phase in the sign of Aries. A full moon in Aries is a peak of emotion, impulsivity and the desire to act immediately. The waning moon in Aries increases the need to complete what has begun, get rid of excess and clear space for new things. Aries is a sign of Mars, so the day carries a lot of energy, but this energy requires careful handling: easy to flare, easy to break firewood. The full moon reveals what has accumulated, and the waning moon in Aries pushes to "cut in life" - both in affairs and in relationships. Below are detailed recommendations for each sign.

Aries (March 21 – April 19)

The full moon in your sign is your personal emotional peak. You will feel electrified: everything inside requires exit, action, immediate results. The waning moon in Aries makes you especially intolerant of other people's delays. This is the day when you can either break through or burn bridges - the choice is yours.

Taurus (20 April – 20 May)

For you, a full moon in Aries is the tension between your desire for stability and the external pressure of “act fast.” The waning moon in Aries can irritate you because of the haste of others. Your task is not to succumb to someone else’s pace and keep yours.

Twins (May 21 – June 20)

A full moon in Aries activates your communicative sphere – you can be particularly harsh in words. The waning moon in Aries pushes you to “say everything,” and this can be both liberating and destructive. The day requires speech filtering.

Cancer (June 21 – July 22)

A full moon in Aries hits your emotional sphere - you may feel particularly vulnerable. The waning Moon in Aries requires you to complete emotional cycles: let go of resentment, close the gestalts. It is a day of inner work, not outer accomplishment.

Leo (July 23 – August 22)

The full moon in Aries of Fire resonates with your fiery nature - you will feel a surge of strength and a desire to shine. The waning moon in Aries requires that this aurora be directed toward completion rather than demonstration. Be careful with pride.

Virgo (23 August – 22 September)

A full moon in Aries creates tension between your perfectionism and the chaotic energy of the day. The waning moon in Aries is the perfect time for a "surgical" sweep: you can cut everything extra with cold precision. This is your day if you set it to completion.

Libra (September 23 – October 22)

A full moon in Aries is a full moon in your opposite sign, which creates tension in partnerships. The waning moon in Aries requires the completion of toxic ties and an honest review of the relationship. Your job is not to lose yourself in an attempt to maintain harmony.

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)

A full moon in Aries will activate your transformational nature – you will feel the urge to “burn bridges” and start over. The waning moon in Aries is your day if you direct your energy toward completion and purification. But beware: a full moon can expose your shadow sides.

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)

The full moon in Aries of Fire resonates with your nature – you will feel a surge of enthusiasm and a desire to act. The waning moon in Aries demands that this enthusiasm be directed toward completion rather than scattering. Be careful with promises.

Capricorn (22 December – 19 January)

A full moon in Aries creates tension between your need for structure and the chaotic energy of the day. The waning moon in Aries is your day for a "surgical" sweep in business and career. You can cut everything with cold precision.

Aquarius (20 January – 18 February)

A full moon in Aries activates your communicative and social spheres – you can be particularly harsh in judgment. The waning moon in Aries pushes you to “say everything,” and this can be both liberating and destructive. The day requires filtration of speech and social contacts.

Pisces (19 February – 20 March)

The full moon in Aries hits your emotional sphere – you may feel particularly vulnerable and disoriented. The waning moon in Aries requires you to complete emotional cycles: let go of illusions, close the gestalts. It is a day of inner work, not outer accomplishment.

A full moon in Aries is a peak of emotional tension, impulsivity and the desire to act immediately. Aries is a sign of Mars, so the day carries a lot of energy, but this energy requires careful handling: easy to flare, easy to break firewood. The full moon reveals what has accumulated: emotions, conflicts, unfinished business come to the surface. The waning Moon in Aries adds to the demandingness of completion: everything that does not work will be felt especially acutely, and there will be a desire to “cut live” – both in business and in relationships. In Russia, this day can be felt especially intensely due to climatic and hourly features: the dark time of the day comes early, which increases the emotional load.

How to behave

Remember, this is the day of completion, not the beginning. Anything you close on October 26 will make room for something new, but something new will come later. Don't rush things.

Today, October 26, 2026, when in Russia the full moon and the waning Moon in Aries, the hair and nail cutting is an ambiguous solution: on the one hand, the waning Moon is traditionally considered favorable for haircuts, since it helps to “cut” the excess moon and complete the cycles, and Aries gives energy to the determination, but on the other hand, the full moon increases impulsivity and emotional load, because of which there is a risk of succumbing to a minute haircut or carelessly take up the nails, so if you also decide to move the chemical plates on a couple of the nails, it is better to move to the nails, then it is more aggressively in order, but it is better to move it to the nails from the nails, but it is more difficult to the nails, but it is better to make it is better to the nails, but it is more difficult to make it is better to move it to the nails to the nails to the nails with the nails, but it is better to make it from the nails to be more difficult to the nails.

The numerical code of this date consists of the sequence 26.10.2026, and when reduced to a single number, the sum of all digits (2 + 6 + 1 + 0 + 0 + 2 + 2 + 6 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, and finally 1 + 0 = 1) gives the vibration of the unit - the number of the beginning, leadership and independence. However, on this day, the unit manifests itself not as a soft start, but as an impulse to completion: it resonates with the waning Moon in Aries, which also requires determination and "cutting the extra." Numerologically, October 26, 2026 is the day when the energy of the unit pushes to take responsibility for the final point in some business: close the project, put an end to a protracted dispute, give up the habit. The number 1 does not tolerate procrastination, but when combined with the full moon, it warns that independence does not equal loneliness, and determination should not become categorical. People born under the vibration of the unit on this day may feel a special surge of strength, but also a special risk of overestimating their rightness.

Special attention should be paid to the mirroring of the date: 26.10.2026 reads as “26-10-2026”, where the sequence 26 and 2026 forms inverse symmetry (26 ь 2026), and “10” acts as the axis of this mirror design. In numerology, mirror dates are considered “feedback points” – a time when the past and future converge at the same point in the present, and everything that has been started or postponed requires revision. The mirror 26,2026 symbolically reflects the cycle: what you started in 2026 returns to you in the form of the question “is it worth it to continue?”, and the number 26 (2+6=8) adds the vibration of the eight – the number of karma, justice and material balance. So the mirror date of October 26, 2026, is the day when the universe seems to show you your reflection: your financial decisions, your relationships, your promises come back to you and ask for an honest look. The eight in the heart of the mirror demands justice, both for oneself and for others, and the one in the final requires a determination to close what doesn’t work.

The practical takeaway for this day: use the vibration of the unit to complete, and the mirroring of the date for an honest revision. If there’s a situation in your life that’s going around—debt, a toxic connection, an unclosed project—October 26, 2026 is the perfect time to look at it in the mirror and make a decision about it. Don’t start a new one: a mirror reflects the past, not the future, and everything new started on that day risks being a repeat of the old. But anything you close with the honesty of the eight and the determination of the one will make room for a real renewal – which will come after the full moon, when the moon begins to decline calmer, and the numerical code of the day will change to a softer one.

From the point of view of astrology, a dream on the night of October 26, 2026 falls into a particularly saturated energy corridor: this is the night before the full moon in Aries, when the moon has almost reached the peak of its fullness, and the waning phase has not yet entered into force - that is, the subconscious mind works at maximum volume, and dreams can be bright, emotional and even aggressive in content. Aries control the head, will, impulses and struggle, so in the dreams of this night especially often appear the plots of chase, fight, competition, anger, haste or decisive actions – all that you suppressed while awake. The full moon reveals the hidden, so a dream can show you not what you want, but what you have replaced: old resentments, unfinished conflicts, fears associated with self-affirmation. If on the night of October 26 you dream of a quarrel, a fight or a scene where you defend your right, this is not a prophecy of a real conflict, but a signal of the psyche that some of your needs require honest recognition. In addition, the Moon in Aries is connected to the body and head, so dreams can be physically felt – with the feeling of falling, running, hitting – and after waking up, it is important not to carry this aggressive energy in the day, but to release it through physical activity.

From the point of view of numerology, the night on October 26, 2026 carries a vibration of unity (2+6+1+0+2+0+2+6 = 19 → 1+9 = 10 → 1+0 = 1) in combination with the mirror symmetry of the date 26ь2026, which gives the dreams of this night the character of “reflection”: images of the past, long-forgotten faces, situations that you thought were closed can pop up in dreams – and all this will ask for a final point. The unit is the number of the beginning and independence, but in a mirrored date it works as a “final unit”: a dream can show you what you need to close yourself, without anyone else’s help. Eight (2+6=8), hidden in the number 26, adds a karmic and material connotation: if on the night of October 26 you dreamed of money, debts, transactions, loss or acquisition of something valuable, it is a reflection of your real balance with the world, and such a dream should be taken as an honest mirror, not as a prediction. Mirror date enhances the property of dreams to “reflect”: what you will see, most likely, is already in your life in one form or another, and the dreamer’s task is not to look for a mystical sign in the plot, but to recognize his own reflection in it and decide on the completion of what “goes in a circle”. Recording a dream on this night is especially useful: the mirror unit helps to see in the written text recurring motifs that you do not notice in wakefulness.

According to the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy IKI and ISZF, the next day the geomagnetic situation will be turbulent: the Kp index will reach 4 points, which almost reaches a weak storm. The night of October 26 can be difficult, especially for meteorologically dependent: from 00:00 to 3:00, the magnetosphere will again go into an excited state, and the Kp index will “jump” to 4 points, while the probability of a magnetic storm is estimated at only 7%, geomagnetic disturbances – 30%, and the remaining 63% fall on the calm magnetosphere. According to the forecast, on October 27, the magnetosphere will calm down, but it is too early to relax: on October 31, the Kp index will reach 5 points, which is estimated as a weak magnetic storm.
