What is the holiday today: October 27, 2026

A separate state holiday for October 27 in Russia is not established.

On this day, believers honor the memory of several Orthodox saints - see the section on church holidays below.

October 27, 2026 - Tuesday, when the Orthodox Church remembers the Monk Paraskeva-Petka of Serbia, and the national calendar celebrates the day of Paraskeva Gryaznuha, or Praskovja Lnyaniha. On this day, according to tradition, women postponed hard work and devoted time to rest, health care and good deeds.

The Monk Paraskeva Petka of Serbia is one of the most revered saints in the Orthodox world, especially in the Balkans. Her memory is celebrated on October 27 (October 14, old style), as well as on August 30 (September 12) in the Cathedral of Serbian Saints. The life of this saint, who lived in the XI century, became an example of ascetic feat, humility and complete dedication to God. Her relics, acquired incorruptible, are still the source of numerous healings, and thousands of people gather on the day of her memory in the Romanian city of Iasi, where they rest.

Origin and family

Paraskeva was born in the city of Epivat (Greek: Επιβάτες, now Selimpasha near Istanbul in Turkey) on the shores of the Sea of Marmara, near Constantinople. According to some reports, this happened in the X century, according to others - in the XI. Her parents were rich and pious people who steadfastly fulfilled all the commandments of God and were famous for their benevolence and charity. In addition to the daughter of Paraskeva, they had a son. He was sent to school, and his daughter was brought up in the house of her pious parents.

Paraskeva's brother, when he had been sufficiently taught the Holy Scriptures, with the consent of his parents, took tonsure under the name Euphemia. Later Euthymius became bishop at Madita (Maditos) on the Hellespont and became famous for his virtuous life, and also during his life and after his death he performed many glorious miracles. Saint Euthymius was born at the beginning of the tenth century in a Thracian village on the banks of Propontis (Sea of Marmara). His mother took him to the monastery of Constantinople. For thirty years Euthymius shone with virtues in this monastery. Then, wishing to lead a silent life, he went to a secluded place outside the city. There the saint for four years asceticized in invisible warfare and talked with God alone. The Bishop of Perinth, seeing the remarkable virtues of the ascetic, ordained him against his will to deacon. Euthymius was consecrated bishop of the city of Madita on the Hellespont. For forty years he was a vigilant shepherd and a faithful guardian of the grace of God. The bishop gave many Christians not only mental health through his teachings, but also physical health through his miracles. During the terrible famine of 989, the saint, sparing no effort, collected food to save the faithful. His fame reached Emperor Basil II (976-1025). When the governor visited the bishop, Euthymius predicted his victory over Varda Phocas, which happened in 989. A few years later, the saint rested in peace, surrounded by spiritual children. Subsequently, many patients received healing at his grave, exuding scented balm.

Escape from the world and asceticism

After the death of her father and mother, Paraskeva left home for ascetic life. Heard at one of the services of the words of Jesus Christ – “If anyone wants to follow me, let him forget about himself” – deeply burned into the soul of the young Paraskeva. On that day, when she left the temple, she saw a poor man and gave him her expensive dress. His parents cursed his daughter, but the monk continued to donate his wealth to the poor. She distributed the inheritance and went to Constantinople, where she lived for five years. There she took monastic tonsure and went to the Holy Land to worship shrines. After a pilgrimage, she settled as a hermit in the desert in the Jordan Valley.

In the desert, Paraskeva began to lead an equal angelic life. Imitating the prophet Elijah and John the Baptist, she ate only desert cereals, using them only in small quantities, and then at sunset. Suffering from heat and cold, she turned her eyes only to the One God, who could save the humble from the whirlwind, from the storm (Psalm 54:9). One God, all-seeing, looked at the exploits of the monk. She had no worries there about worldly vanity: she cared only about the purification of the soul, about answering the future judgment and meeting the Heavenly Bridegroom. “To you, my wife, I seek,” said the Monk Paraskeva, and constantly kept in mind the saying from the book of Songs of Songs: “Tell me, you, whom my soul loves” (Song 1:6). She cared most about how to decorate her lamp and, together with the wise virgins, go out to meet the Heavenly Bridegroom, hear His sweet voice and enjoy the sight of His beauty. “When I come and appear before the face of God.” (Psalm 41:3), the saint said continually.

When St. Paraskeva was in the desert, the evil enemy envied her virtues and tried to frighten her with dreams and ghosts. Repeatedly turning into various beasts, he rushed to the saint, in order to create an obstacle for her on the path of exploits. But the good bride of Christ Paraskeva, “You have chosen the Most High as your refuge” (Psalm 90:9), and with His help, as a sign of His holy cross, drove away enemies and tore apart, like a web, all the intrigues of the devil, and completely deposed him. The saint, in her feminine nature, had a truly masculine mind and conquered the devil as David conquered Goliath. Having adorned her soul with such exploits and virtues, Paraskeva became the beloved bride of Christ, so that the prophetic word was fulfilled on her: “The king will desire your beauty” (Psalm 44:12). Thus this King dwelled in it with the Father and the Holy Spirit, and dwelt in it, as in his holy church, for Saint Paraskeva, having preserved her soul from sin and defilement, became the church of the Living God.

Return and demise

One night Paraskeva, after a long stay in the desert, as usual with tenderness stretching her hands to the sky, stood in prayer. Suddenly she saw an angel of God coming to her in the form of an illumined youth, who said, “Leave the wilderness and return to your homeland, for it is fitting for you to leave your body on earth and go with your soul to the Lord.” The monk, having penetrated into the meaning of the vision, realized that God’s command was reflected in him; she rejoiced that the time for her resolution from the body was near, but she was sorry to part with the desert solitude – for nothing so purifies the soul and brings it closer to the Primodel as desert and silence. However, obeying the will of heaven, the monk left the desert and went to his homeland.

Arriving in the reigning city of Constantinople, she entered there the beautiful temple of the Wisdom of God, also visited the Church of Vlacherna and, bowing before the miraculous icon of the Mother of God, went to her homeland in Epivat, where she lived for some time, without changing her usual desert feat of fasting and prayers. When the time came for her departure to God, Paraskeva prayed fervently for herself and for the whole world, and during prayer she gave her blessed soul to God. Her body was buried by the faithful according to Christian custom, but not in the general cemetery, like the body of a stranger who did not tell anyone about herself where she came from. According to some reports, she returned home two years before her death in old age and died without finding anyone alive.

Finding Relics and Their History

God, who wanted to glorify His saint, after many years revealed her relics under the following circumstances. Near the place where the monk was buried, in the feats of silence on the pillar, a certain columnist asceticized. It happened that there was thrown waves body of a shipman who fell ill during the voyage of a serious illness and died. A stench began to emanate from this corpse, so that it was impossible to pass along that road; even the columnist who was struggling near that place could not tolerate this stench, and he was forced to come down from the pillar. Therefore, he ordered to dig a deep pit and bury a stinking corpse in it. When the workers were digging a hole, they found an imperishable body lying in the ground, and were greatly surprised by this. But since the workers were inexperienced and ignorant, they did not pay due attention to what had happened. They said, “If this body were holy, God would reveal it by miracles.” With these thoughts, they again covered the incorruptible body with earth, throwing a stinking corpse there, and then went home.

As the night fell, one of them, a certain George, a pious man, prayed to God in his house. Having fallen asleep in the morning, he saw in a dream a certain queen sitting on the throne, and around her stands a great many bright warriors. Embracing fear and unable to look at this royal greatness and glory, George fell to the ground. Then one of the bright warriors, taking George by the hand, lifted him up and said: "George!" Why did you so despise the body of St. Paraskeva and bury the stinking corpse with him? Immediately take the body of the monk and lay it in a worthy place, for God has chosen to glorify His servant on earth. Also, the bright queen said to him, Hurry to take out my relics and put them in a worthy place, because I can no longer tolerate the stench from that corpse. For I am a man, and my homeland is Epivat, where you also live today. That same night there was the same vision of a pious woman named Euphemia. In the morning they both told everyone what they saw. Hearing this, the pious people went with lit candles to the relics of the Monk Paraskeva and with reverence took them out of the earth, rejoicing as it were about a treasure of many value. The holy relics were solemnly laid in the church of the saints and all-chambered apostles Peter and Paul in the village of Epivat, where, through the prayers of Saint Paraskeva, many healings were given to the sick from her relics: the blind saw their eyes, the lame began to walk, and all the sick and demonic received health.

In 1238, during the reign of the Crusaders (Catholics) in Constantinople, the most pious John Asen, King of Bulgaria and Serbia, received news of the place where the holy relics of St. Paraskeva rest. Then he instructed Blessed Mark, then Metropolitan of Pereyaslav of Bulgaria, with many bishops and priests, to transfer those honest relics to the throne city of the Bulgarian land - Ternov (Tirnovgrad). There the holy relics were honorably placed in the court church, where, incorruptibly resting, exuded various healings to all who came to them with faith.

After a considerable time, by God’s permission, the Muslims gradually conquered the entire Greek Empire, and with it conquered the kingdoms of Bulgaria and Serbia. This conquest took place in the XIV century, during the time of the Turkish Sultan Bayazet. When Sultan Bayazet took the Bulgarian city of Ternov, all church jewels and royal decorations were looted. Then the holy relics of Paraskeva, dressed in one garment, were transferred to Wallachia. After the conquest of the Turks and Wallachia in 1396, the holy relics at the request of the Serbian Queen Milica before the Sultan were transferred to Serbia in Belgrade.

In 1521 Sultan Suleiman I, having taken Belgrade, also stole from there the honest relics of the Monk Paraskeva; then bringing them to Constantinople, he placed them here in his chambers. But this treasure of many value was not lost here either, for numerous miracles from the relics of the monk contributed to its glorification not only among Christians, but even among Muslims. The latter, bewildered by this circumstance and fearing that faith in the miraculous power of the relics of St. Paraskeva would not spread even more widely, but most of all through the diligence and care of Christians, handed over these holy relics to the Christians of Constantinople, and they honorably laid them in the Patriarchal Church.

In 1641, the pious Vasily-Lupulus, voivode and ruler of Moldavian, having received the news that the relics of St. Paraskeva were located in the Patriarchal Church of Constantinople, zealously wished that they should be transferred from there with honor to his glorious lordly district. His desire was facilitated by the Lord glorified in His saints, who also wished to glorify the Monk Paraskeva in Moldavia. Then the Patriarch of Constantinople, Parthenius, with the consent of his entire consecrated council and the consent of other honest patriarchs, sent the honest relics of St. Paraskeva to the pious sovereign, voivode Basil, to the first-throned city of his Yassy. Here, in the church of the three hierarchs, with great honors, with great joy and joy of the inhabitants of all Moldavia, the holy relics were laid in 1641 on the Nativity of Christ, October 14th day. Since then they are in Iasi, and Saint Paraskeva is considered the patroness of Moldavia, since the location of her relics - the city of Iasi - was the ancient capital of historical Moldavia. Thousands of people gather in the Iasi Cathedral Church of the Three Hierarchs on the day of the celebration of her memory on October 27.

Reverence in the Balkans and the Eastern Slavs

The Monk Paraskeva of Serbia, also known as Tarnovskaya, Bulgarian, Moldavian, is especially revered in the Balkan countries. In the Greek Church, she is revered as Light Petka. In Russian life in the old days, Saint Paraskeva was called “Paraskeva-Friday”. The image of St. Paraskeva in the lands of the Eastern Slavs closely merged with the ancient cult of pagan Mokoshi, to which women dedicated a Friday day. The saint received the double name Paraskeva-Friday. The Russian people called Saint Paraskeva – Friday, Pyatina, Petka. Popular was the Russified form of the name - Praskovya, reduced. Parasha, Pana. The word “Friday” almost turned into an independent female name, which could exist next to Praskovya, as the names Warrior and Postnik.

In the folk tradition, Saint Paraskeva merged with the image of Paraskeva Friday - the patroness of women, family, needlework and trade. In Russia, Paraskeva was especially revered by women: she was considered the protector of the female share, an assistant in spinning, weaving and household chores. In her honor, temples were built, icons were painted, and the day of her memory became an important milestone in the autumn calendar. In the national calendar, October 27 is called Paraskeva Dirty, or Praskovya Linyanikha. The nickname “Mud” appeared because by the end of October it often rained and the roads turned into impassable mud. The name "Linniha" is due to the fact that from that day began to crumple and tremble flax.

In Belgrade, a miraculous spring has been preserved, which arose through the prayers of the saint, bringing healing to many. The myrrhic relics of her brother, St. Euthymius, are an inexhaustible source to this day. Saint Paraskeva is considered a healer of mental and physical ailments, the guardian of family well-being and happiness. She was dedicated to temples and roadside chapels (Fridays); she was considered the patroness of fields and cattle. In Russia, Paraskev Friday prayed for the preservation of livestock, the healing of diseases, especially fever, toothache and headache. Flowers and herbs attached to the image of the martyr were considered one of the most effective remedies. They were boiled in water and this broth was watered by sick households or animals.

Iconography and hymnography

On the icons, the Monk Paraskeva is depicted in monastic robe, with a cross in his hand. One of the famous icons comes from the Klisur Kirillo-Mefodievsky monastery. In Orthodox churches on October 27, prayers dedicated to the Holy Great Martyr Paraskeva are read, the memory of the Monk Paraskeva Petka of Serbia is celebrated. Marriage, according to the church charter, is not performed on this day. The memory of the saint is also celebrated on August 30 (September 12) in the Council of Serbian Saints.

The life of St. Paraskeva-Petka of Serbia is an example of complete renunciation of worldly goods for the sake of serving God. She left a rich parental home, distributed her inheritance to the poor and spent many years in the harsh desert, where she was subjected to temptations and attacks of the devil, but with God’s help she defeated them. Her feat became a symbol of female holiness and strength of spirit. Saint Paraskeva is revered as the patroness of women, the guardian of the hearth and the intercessor in matters of life. Her relics, acquired incorruptible and transferred through many countries, are still a source of healing and spiritual support for thousands of believers.

On this day, the name day is celebrated by men with the names Andrei, Valentine, Ignatius, Kuzma, Mark, Mikhail, Nazar, Nestor, Nikolai, Peter, Svyatoslav, as well as Gervasii, Celsius, Protasius and Silvan. Women's namesakes - at Praskovya (Paraskeva).

People born on this day, by signs, are distinguished by determination, internal concentration, attention to detail and the ability to maintain stability even in times of change. They have developed intuition, they are emotional and sensitive.

In the national calendar, the day is called Paraskev Gryaznykh (also Poroshikha, Trepalnitsa, Lnyanitsa, Lyanikha, Paraskeva Friday).

Paraskeva is considered the patroness of women's winter work - primarily spinning.

"It is not dry on Mud" - on this day it is usually damp and slushy.

If there is mud on the roads on Paraskeva, then about four weeks remain before the arrival of winter.

If the mud is deep and the horse hoof is drowned in water, then the snow that fell will immediately lie down completely.

“With Mud, neither the wheel nor the crawl can overcome the way” – muddy prevents passage.

The twenty-seventh of October in the national calendar is named after Paraskeva Gryaznuha, or Praskovya Lnyaniha. The day was nicknamed “Mud” because of the autumn muddy: by the end of October, prolonged rains blurred the roads, turning them into impassable mud, and peasants preferred to sit at home so as not to get stuck somewhere in the way. The name "Linniha" is due to the fact that it was from this date that flax began to crumple and tremble. The girls tried especially, because their work was watched by future suitors and mother-in-law, and products made of linen processed on this day, according to legend, came out especially durable and beautiful. The main meaning of the holiday is peace and rest, primarily for women: St. Paraskeva was revered as the protector of the woman’s lot, and any hard work on this day was considered a sin.

On the day of Paraskeva Mud, the hostess cooked millet porridge and generously seasoned it with fresh flaxseed oil - such a dish, according to legend, strengthened health. It was customary to appease the housekeeper: at night they left food in the kitchen or took food to the yard, so that the cattle were well managed and prosperity reigned in the household. The day was devoted to good deeds - they gave alms, helped the needy, visited relatives, because it was believed that the good on this day returns three times. Single girls on October 27 promised fateful meetings, but to stay at home alone was not recommended - you could "stay in girls." Women prayed to St. Paraskeva for family well-being, the health of children and good luck in household affairs, sometimes tying a ribbon or a patch of fabric to her icon as a sign of request and gratitude.

There were a lot of bans that day. It was impossible to spin – this threatened rapid loss of vision, as well as washing, washing floors and cleaning: they believed that the saint went to the houses and inspected the house, and dirty water and disorder could offend her, and then luck would leave the house. Under the ban were sewing, knitting and embroidery – “not to cut Saint Paraskeva with needles”, as well as cutting and combing hair, especially for pregnant women: it was believed that this could affect the severity of childbirth. It was not necessary to laugh loudly and make noise – they believed that after that they would have to cry a lot, as well as go on long trips, start new business and rude to their elders. According to the weather, Paraskeva was judged about the future: the western wind foreshadowed dampness, an abundance of mud - the imminent arrival of winter in four weeks, bright stars - a rich harvest, and crows' squeak - an early thaw.

Astrological situation of the day: the waning moon in Taurus. Taurus is a sign of the earthly element, ruled by Venus, so the day carries the energy of thoroughness, practicality, attention to the material and physical. The waning Moon directs forces to complete what has begun, restore order, get rid of excess and sum up. This time is not for leaps forward, but for fixing the rear, calculations and calm but hard work.

Aries (March 21 – April 19)

Taurus (20 April – 20 May)

Twins (May 21 – June 20)

Cancer (June 21 – July 22)

Leo (July 23 – August 22)

Virgo (23 August – 22 September)

Libra (September 23 – October 22)

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)

Capricorn (22 December – 19 January)

Aquarius (20 January – 18 February)

Pisces (19 February – 20 March)

How does the Moon affect Taurus? Taurus is an earthly, stable, sensual sign ruled by Venus. The moon in it makes the day slow, thorough and “material”: the attention to money, body, food, comfort and security is sharpened. The diminishing phase increases the craving for completion, purification and summing up. There is little energy to start, but a lot to consolidate the result. Possible increased stubbornness, reluctance to change plans, craving for overeating and spending "for pleasure.".

How to behave:

The day is not for jerks, but for a solid foundation. Those who calmly and thoroughly fix the rear today will be able to move forward confidently tomorrow.

Today, October 27, 2026, when the waning Moon is in Taurus, cutting hair and nails is a rather favorable solution if you approach it without haste and with a practical purpose: the waning Moon is traditionally considered a good time to “remove the extra”, and Taurus, controlled by Venus, favors the care of yourself and everything related to the body and beauty, so the haircut for updating the shape, improving the tips or getting rid of the grown length will be successful and the result will last for a long time; nails on this day it is better to cut neatly and without experiments, and if you do not want to change your hair in a hurry, and do so much that you do not like to change your hair for a long time.

October 27, 2026 carries a numerical code collected from the date: 2 + 7 + 1 + 0 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 20, and then 2 + 0 = 2. Thus, the vibrating number of this day becomes a deuce - a symbol of partnership, balance, patience and the ability to hear the other. Two does not tolerate single jerks and loud statements: its strength lies in soft interaction, in the ability to agree, find a compromise and build a bridge between opposites. In combination with the waning Moon in Taurus, which requires thoroughness and completion of what has begun, the energy of the two suggests that today it is important not to rush, but to carefully make ends meet - in business, in relationships and in your own thoughts.

For financial and business issues, a deuce means that success comes through negotiation, not pressure. If you are planning a deal, meeting or signing a contract, try to hear the other side and offer mutually beneficial terms - today the winner is not the one who is louder, but the one who is attentive. The waning moon in Taurus adds a day of practicality: any monetary decisions should be supported by calculations and specific figures, not emotions. Avoid impulsive purchases and arguments about money – the deuce rewards those who remain calm and ready for dialogue, and punishes stubbornness, which today especially easily turns into conflict.

In personal life, the number 2 favors quiet, warm conversations, reconciliation and joint plans for the future. This is a good day to restore order in relations: close old grievances, calmly discuss household issues, spend the evening together without haste and fuss. For those who are single, two does not promise high-profile acquaintances, but tells: pay attention to people with whom you are associated with common affairs and repetitive meetings. On the whole, October 27, 2026 is a day when it is worth slowing down, putting in order the thoughts and space around you, completing what has been hanging for a long time, and setting yourself up for cooperation, not competition: it is in this calm, attentive energy that the main resource of the day is hidden.

The night of October 27, 2026 falls between the waning Moon in Taurus and its transition to subsequent phases, so dreams of this period are traditionally associated with the completion, purification and summing up: Taurus makes dreams "earthly" and concrete - they often come images of home, food, money, things, body and loved ones, rather than abstract symbols. If you dreamed of order in the apartment, repair, disassembly of cabinets, buying or losing things, billing money, food or a cozy family evening - such a dream should be read as a hint that it is time to close the unfinished, get rid of excess and strengthen your life; the waning Moon enhances prophetic dreams about what is already leaving your life, so dreams about losses, parting and liberation from something old often carry not a warning, but confirmation of the correctness of the chosen path. On the contrary, dreams of abrupt changes, moving, high-profile conflicts and haste on this night are considered "noisy": Taurus does not like fuss, and such images reflect your inner anxiety rather than real events - they should be listened to as a signal that you are too hasty events.

From the point of view of numerology, the date of October 27, 2026 is reduced to the number 2 (2 + 7 + 1 + 0 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 20 → 2 + 0 = 2), and the two in dreams governs the themes of partnership, balance, dialogue and reconciliation - so dreams about people with whom you are connected by ties: spouse, friend, colleague, relative, as well as dreams where you share something, negotiate, reconcile or, conversely, quarrel. If in a dream you have found a compromise, reconciled or agreed on something important - this is a good sign, foreshadowing the calm resolution of real disagreements; if you dream of conflict, misunderstanding or a feeling that you are not heard - this is a hint to pay attention to some unspoken word in real relationships. The two is also associated with intuition and the ability to listen, so on the night of October 27, you should trust quiet, calm dreams in which you simply observe, listen or feel - they, according to the aggregate of astrological and numerological indicators, carry the most accurate and useful meaning, while bright, loud and chaotic dreams are better viewed as a reflection of daytime experiences, not as a prophecy.

On October 27, Scorpions are born.

The air will warm up to 9 degrees, cloudy, without rain.

The air will warm up to 10 degrees, cloudy, without precipitation.

On October 27, geomagnetic activity will not exceed 2 points. Such slight perturbations of the magnetic field will not affect the atmosphere and will not be noticeable to people sensitive to geomagnetic changes.
