What is the holiday today: October 7, 2026

According to the Orthodox Church calendar, on October 7 (September 24, according to the old style), memory is celebrated:

In Catholic tradition, the feast of the Virgin Mary of the Rosary is celebrated today, established in memory of the victory of the Christian fleet at the Battle of Lepanto in 1571.

October 7, 2026 in the national calendar celebrates the day of Thekla Zarevenitsa, which is also called Zarevalnitsa. The Orthodox Church on this date honors the memory of the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Thekla of Iconia, an early Christian martyr converted to faith by the Apostle Paul. In the old days, it was noticed that daylight is rapidly decreasing, the nights are getting longer, and the sun seems to be hiding. This day is associated with many traditions, signs and prohibitions, which should not be forgotten.

Since October 7 is a church holiday, its order is determined by liturgical tradition. Believers should, if possible, come to the service and pray to St. Theukle. In 2026, the day of commemoration falls on Wednesday - a lean day, so hot vegetable food in vegetable oil is allowed. There are no canonical prohibitions on work if it does not interfere with participation in worship. The main thing is to avoid deeds that distract from prayer, as well as quarrels and empty words. The Church reminds that the holy feast is a time for good deeds and spiritual reflection.

On this day, the name day is celebrated by men with the names Andrei, Anton, Vasily, Vitaly, Vladislav, David, Demyan, Joseph, Leonty, Mark, Nikolai, Pavel, Sergey, Stepan, as well as women with the names Pelagei and Thekl.

Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Thekla of Iconia is one of the first Christian women to suffer for the faith, a disciple of the Apostle Paul and the first woman preacher, whom the Church awarded the rare title of Equal-to-the-Apostles. Her memory is celebrated on October 7 (September 24 according to the Julian calendar). The life of the saint refers believers to the first century after the birth of Christ, and the events of her life unfolded in the lands of Asia Minor. The story of Thekla is a testament to how grace can radically change human life and lead a person through incredible trials to holiness.

The Origin and Youth of Thekla

Theokla was born in the I century in the city of Iconia - this is the territory of modern Turkey, now the city of Konya. She came from a wealthy and noble pagan family and was distinguished by rare beauty. At the age of eighteen, the girl was engaged to a young man named Famirides, who came from a respected family. It seemed that she was waiting for the ordinary life of a married woman from a wealthy family, but everything changed with the arrival of the Apostles Paul and Barnabas to Iconia.

The apostle Paul preached in the house of one of the locals named Onysiphorus. Thekla heard his sermon and was so carried away by the new teaching that she listened to the apostle for several days, almost without leaving the window. The words of the apostle about Christ touched the very heart of the girl. She loved the Lord with all her being and made a firm decision not to marry, but to devote herself to evangelical ministry.

Family conflict and first imprisonment

The choice of Thekla did not suit either her family or her fiancé. Famirides appealed to the city authorities with a complaint against Paul, accusing the preacher of convincing young women not to marry and forbidding virgins to marry. The apostle was arrested and imprisoned.

According to legend, at night Thekla secretly left the house, gave her jewelry to the gatekeeper and prison guard and thus penetrated the prisoner. She spent three days near the apostle, taking his instructions. Eventually she was found and forcibly taken home, and Paul was punished and expelled from Iconia. But the girl was adamant.

Sentence to burning and miraculous rescue

For refusing marriage and professing the Christian faith, Thekla was sentenced to burning. The girl’s mother, driven to frenzy by disobedience of her daughter, herself demanded a death sentence for her. Thekla fearlessly ascended the prepared fire and overshadowed herself with the sign of the cross. Life tells us that at this moment the Savior himself appeared to her, who blessed her. The execution did not take place: there was a thunderbolt, a rainstorm with hail began, and the flames went out. The tormentors were scattered in horror.

After a miraculous salvation, Thekla left Iconia and sought out the Apostle Paul. In his company, she reached Antioch, where new trials awaited her.

Tests in Antioch

In Antioch, an influential and noble citizen named Alexander, struck by the beauty of Thekla, tried to take possession of the girl by force. She resisted and publicly humiliated him. For this, Thekla was sentenced to a new execution - she was to be torn apart by wild animals in the arena.

Hungry predators were twice released into the arena, but they did not cause holy harm - they only humbly laid down at her feet. After the Protomartyr was then lowered into a pit with snakes, then tied to angry bulls, but each time the Providence of God kept her unharmed. The crowd exclaimed, “Great is the Christian God!” The ruler, overcome by fear, liberated Thekla.

Preaching and service in Seleucia

After the liberation of Thekl again found the Apostle Paul – this time in the world of Lycia. Having received his blessing to preach, she first returned to her native Iconia, where she converted her mother to Christianity, and then settled in the desert places near Seleucia of Isauria.

There the saint spent many years in fasting, prayer and divine thought. This period of her life is full of miracles: Thekla healed any ailments, and the inhabitants of the surrounding villages, among which the fame of her spread, brought patients to her. Through her preaching, she brought many pagans to faith, for which the Church awarded her the title of equal to the apostles – that is, equal to the apostles in missionary work.

Once a pagan priest, seduced by the beauty of Thekla, plotted evil. The saint, strengthened by the power of God, overthrew him. For three days the priest lay motionless, and when he woke up he said that he had seen “a certain goddess.” He urged the artist to paint the image of the holy virgin and, having attached himself to the icon, received healing. His whole family converted to Christianity.

Holy end

The doctors and sorcerers of Seleucia, who lost their income because of the selfless healings of Thekla, hated her and sent depraved youths to desecrate the saint. When Feukle was about ninety years old, the pursuers came close. So he turned to them and prayed to God. Then a rock opened before the martyr and hid her forever. This is the end of the holy life.

Why Thekla is called equal-to-the-apostles and first-martyr

According to church tradition, equal-to-apostles are those whose missionary work is on a par with the deeds of the disciples of Christ. Saint Thekla earned this title by preaching for many years in Seleucia of Isauria, where her word led many pagans to faith. She was not limited to personal confession, but carried the Gospel to others, participating in the apostolic cause along with the closest associates of the Apostle Paul.

The title of First Martyr means that Thekla was the first woman to suffer for Christ. Her path of trials opened in Iconia, when her mother demanded a death sentence for her daughter for confessing Christ’s teaching. Church tradition calls her “the glory of the wives and the teacher of the sufferers”, seeing in her an example of courage for all who have to go through persecution.

Honoring Saint Thecla

Saint Thekla is revered as the patroness of women and preachers, as an intercessor in diseases and bodily ailments. She is prayed for healing, especially from eye and skin diseases, as well as from burns, remembering her miraculous salvation from the fire. They also pray for strengthening the faith, especially when trials or persecutions for Christian beliefs are ahead.

There are cases of miraculous help through the prayers of St. Thekla for infertility. At the spring in Maaloula, where, according to legend, her tomb is located, and today the suffering receive healing. The saint is also revered as the patroness of chastity and those who aspire to a chaste life dedicated to God.

Folk traditions associated with the name of Thekla

In the folk tradition, the holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Thekla received the nickname of the Spraydresser. The traditions of the day of Thekla Zapredalnitsa are associated with the beginning of autumn spinning works: peasant women sat at the spinning wheels, asking the saint for help in needlework. This custom has no theological significance, but reflects the everyday perception of the saint as a helper in women’s works.

The second popular name - Zarevnitsa - appeared because of the tradition at midnight to sink ovine for drying sheaves. A bright glow from the fire lit up the night sky, and because of the frequent fires at this time, the saint was called the “jew”. By early October, the main field work was coming to an end, but it was time to process the harvest and housework.

There were signs associated with this day: if there are few stars in the sky, the winter will be mild, and if there are many, severe. However, such beliefs remain only folklore. The Church emphasizes that no signs replace faith and prayer, and the true veneration of the saint consists in imitating her faith and love for Christ.

The meaning of the life of Thekla for believers

The life of the First Martyr Thekla remains for believers an example of the determination to follow God in spite of all circumstances. The saint teaches Christians that no trial can shake the soul devoted to the Lord. Her journey from a rich pagan bride to a preacher, before whose word whole cities bowed, is a testament to how grace can fundamentally change human life.

The story of Thekla of Iconia is the story of how a meeting with the apostolic preaching can change the fate of a person. She gave up a secure future, marriage, and family prosperity in order to serve Christ. She went through fire, through wild beasts, through persecution and persecution, but remained true to her choice. And the Church, remembering her feat, has been honoring her for two thousand years as the Equal-to-the-Apostles First Martyr, the first woman to suffer for Christ and devote her life to preaching the Gospel.

In the national calendar, this day is called Thekla Zarevnica. There are several traditions and beliefs associated with it:

They finished cleaning beets from the beds, saying: "Thekla, pull the beets.".

From this day on, the days become noticeably shorter and the nights darker.

In the old days, it was believed that everything you tie on October 7 will be strong and inseparable. Therefore, this day was considered favorable for weddings - the marriage promised to be good and lasting.

There was a belief: if the guy did not take the girl’s hand and did not take the kalach brought by her, then she was destined to remain in the girls. If the touch of the hand was cold, she would marry a poor man, and if warm, a wealthy man.

The seventh of October in the national calendar is called Thekla Zarevnitsa, or Zarevalnitsa, and is associated with the memory of the holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Thekla of Iconium. In the old days, by this time, the main field work was coming to an end, but it was time to process the harvest and housework. The peasants continued to hammer: sheaves of grain were dried in tins, and then threshed, separating the grain from the ears. Because of the short autumn day, it was often necessary to work with fire, and the bright reflections from the heated tins were far from visible in the dark - hence the second name of the holiday, Zarevnitsa. The stove of tins was trusted only by experienced owners, since dry straw and open fire could easily cause a fire, and before starting the work they tried to appease the spirit-owner of the building - the vinnik, leaving him a treat. The hammers began with the fact that the sheaf was first threshed, isolated during the harvest and stored separately; from the resulting flour, bread was baked, which was shared with households, believing that this ritual helps to maintain health and prosperity in the family until the next harvest.

The day of Thekla is associated with the beginning of autumn spinning works. Women took out spinning wheels and tried at least a little splash exactly on October 7: according to legends, the work started on this day will argue all winter, and together with threads in the house you can “hide” luck and harmony in the family. Hence the name of the saint - the Reserver. There was also a well-known belief: "What you tie to Thekla - do not untie." It was extended not only to yarn, but also to human relationships, so the day was considered suitable for weddings - it was hoped that the union concluded on October 7 would be as strong as a tight knot. Unmarried girls arranged fortune-telling to find out whether to wait for the wedding soon: they took a kalach and went to the ovine, where they extended their hand with a treat through a small window. Warm touch, according to legend, promised a wealthy husband, cold – poor, and if no one touches, marriage in the next year is not expected. In addition, on October 7, the peasants tried to finish harvesting beets so that the first frosts did not damage the harvest, hence the saying: “Tear the beets on Thekla”. The hostess prepared beetroot and other hot dishes from it, and the strongest root vegetables were sent for storage. On the same day, in some areas, for the last time during the season, they went for mushrooms - until the persistent cold came, the ancestors collected hogs and other late mushrooms, which were fried, added to pies or harvested for the winter.

A number of prohibitions were associated with Thekla Zapredalnitsa, the main of which concerned quarrels in the family, rudeness towards parents and elderly relatives. According to legends, disrespect for the elders will turn into diseases and troubles, and the conflict that began on October 7 will last for a long time, so at home the ancestors tried to talk calmly and not bring minor disagreements to a serious quarrel. It was not recommended to mourn and cry on this day - it was believed that the longing experienced for Thekla would last for a whole year. They did not lend money, bread or salt so that luck would not go along with the debt, and did not make large deals, fearing that the agreements would be fragile or bring losses. They did not leave the house in a mess, leaving on business - they believed that this would bring hard times to the house and its owners. They did not cut their hair so as not to lose their vitality, and did not quarrel near a fire or stove, believing that this could cause fire or serious trouble. Peasants carefully watched nature, especially the trees, birds and autumn sky, to determine the signs of early frosts and a lot of snow in the coming winter. The abundance of acorns on oaks foreshadowed a mild winter and harvestable summer, thunder - a warm and snowless winter, low flight of birds - early cold, and a generous crop of ash - severe frosts.

On October 7, 2026, the waning moon will be in the sign of Leo. This combination gives a powerful but dual impulse: Leo adds passion, drama, desire to be the center of attention, and the waning Moon calls to finish things, get rid of excess and sum up. The day can feel like a "scene after the play" - you want bright emotions, but the energy is already on the decline. It is important not to confuse confidence with self-confidence, and generosity with profligacy.

Aries (March 21 – April 19)

Taurus (20 April – 20 May)

Twins (May 21 – June 20)

Cancer (June 21 – July 22)

Leo (July 23 – August 22)

Virgo (23 August – 22 September)

Libra (September 23 – October 22)

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)

Capricorn (22 December – 19 January)

Aquarius (20 January – 18 February)

Pisces (19 February – 20 March)

This is a period when energy is declining, but passions are still boiling. The lion is a sign of fire, drama and self-expression, and the waning moon is a time of completion, purification and summing up. Together they create a contradiction: you may want vivid emotions, attention and recognition, but the universe will say, “Stop, complete, let go.” This is a day when it is easy to overestimate your strength, fall into drama or spend too much. But this is also the perfect time to beautifully close old chapters.

How to behave:

Remember, this is the day of completion. Anything you close today will make room for new growth after the new moon.

October 7, 2026 is not a day for leaps forward. It is a time of wisdom, completion and purification. Use it to get rid of old loads, and don’t give in to the temptation to play hero. Modesty, self-care, and completeness are the best strategies of the day.

On October 7, 2026, when the waning Moon will be in Leo, hair and nails cutting is an ambiguous matter: on the one hand, the waning Moon is traditionally considered favorable for haircuts, as it helps to get rid of excess and slows down growth, but Leo is a sign associated with hair and pride, and in the days of Leo, haircuts can negatively affect their thickness and shine, so if you want to just refresh the shape or get rid of split ends, it is better to choose a neutral time, and if you increase the volume and health of the shape of the aggressive form, and the other one can not be so difficult to do with a haircution, it is better today.

The numerical vibration of this date consists of the total sum: 7 + 1 + 0 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 18, which, when reduced, gives 9 (1 + 8). Nine is the number of completion, wisdom and letting go, and it resonates remarkably accurately with the astrological picture of the day, where the waning moon in Leo also calls for summing up and getting rid of excess. However, there is a second layer: the number of the day itself is 7, which in numerology is responsible for intuition, analysis and internal search. The combination of seven and nine creates a rare alloy: today it is not enough just to close the old chapter - it is important to understand what it has taught you, otherwise the vacant space will quickly fill with the same mistakes. People born under the influence of these numbers, as well as those whose personal year or month coincides with 7 or 9, will feel the day especially acute.

For day-to-day affairs, this means that October 7, 2026, is categorically unsuitable for starting a new business, wedding, relocation or major purchase - anything started under the vibration of the nine risks quickly dissolving or claiming unplanned sacrifices. But the day is ideal for audit: financial, emotional, household. Nine likes to forgive debts - and not only monetary, but also moral, so today it is worth writing a letter in which you mentally let go of an old offense, or just throw away things that have been lying for years "just in case." Seven advises not to make decisions in public: the best insights will come alone, in silence, for reading or analysis. Whether you’ve long wanted to deconstruct an archive of photographs, complete a diary, or complete training that has lasted for months, today’s energy will be on your side.

Finally, it’s important to keep in mind the shadow side of the number 9: it’s not only the completion, but also the temptation to go into illusion, sacrifice, and self-flagellation. Combined with the dramatic Lion and the waning Moon, this can lead to a desire to “burn bridges” where it was enough to close the door. Numerologists advise on October 7, 2026, to refrain from extremes: do not cut from the shoulder, do not declare war on former partners, do not distribute all property "in the name of a higher goal." The ideal scenario of the day is a calm, conscious conclusion: finish the last page, pay back someone else’s debt, apologize if conscience demands, and go to bed with a light heart. Nine does not tolerate fuss, and seven does not forgive superficiality, so the only way to go this day with benefit is to make less, but deeper.

Dreams on the night of October 7, 2026 will be formed under the double influence of: The waning moon in Leo and the numerological vibration of the number 9 (completion, letting go, wisdom). This rare combination makes dreams unusually vivid, theatrical and emotionally intense – Leo loves drama and close-ups, so you may dream scenes where you are in the spotlight: stage, court, holiday, quarrel in public or triumphant performance. But since the moon is waning and the number of days is nine, the true meaning of such dreams is not in predicting glory, but in a hint: what is out of date in your life and requires completion. If in a dream you shone, but felt emptiness, it is a signal that outer recognition no longer nourishes you. If you’ve watched someone else’s success from the outside, it may be time to let go of envy or stop living other people’s scripts. Especially significant will be dreams associated with hair, lions, fire, kings and children – all these symbols of Leo and the waning Moon are colored in tones of “farewell” and “purification”.

The interpretation of such dreams depends on the details, but there are general patterns. To see you cut or lose your hair is to get rid of old resentments and unnecessary attachments, although Leo may add to the feelings of lost attractiveness; such dreams advise you not to cling to the image, but to accept the natural course of things. A flame, a fire, or a fire in a dream is a sign that passion or anger require a way out, but the waning Moon says: Don’t fan the fire, let it go out yourself. Dreams of kings, bosses, parents are a projection of your inner authority; if such a character leaves, quits, or dies in a dream, then you are ready to take responsibility for your life. Water, tears, rain on the night of October 7 - a favorable symbol: they wash away what the nine has already counted. But the chase, captivity or exam, which you did not pass, may reflect the fear of completion: you are afraid that you will not cope with the final, but the dream suggests that the final is close, and it is better to pass it consciously. Write down dreams of the night: they are rarely literal, but almost always point to one particular chapter to close.

On October 7, Libras are born.

The air will warm up to 13 degrees, cloudy, without rain.

On Wednesday, the geomagnetic environment will finally return to normal, leaving the risk zone. Throughout the day, the Kp index will stay in the range of about 2 to 3.5 points. The most pronounced jump in activity is predicted in the morning hours, but even then the values will not go beyond the green corridor. The chances of a calm magnetosphere will reach 73%. The perturbed state will account for 20%, and the probability of a full-fledged magnetic storm (red sector) will narrow to 7%. Thus, Wednesday will be the most serene day of all three days. Provided that the Sun does not carry out another release of plasma towards the Earth, the geomagnetic field will continue to come into equilibrium.
