What is the holiday today: November 9, 2026

November 9, 2026 is the 313th day of the outgoing year. This day is rich in important historical dates, professional and international holidays, and has deep roots in the Orthodox tradition and folk beliefs. Let’s take a closer look at what this day is all about.

What is the holiday today: November 9, 2026

This Monday, the calendar of professional dates proposes to celebrate the Day of the Special Rapid Response Team (SOBR). This is a professional holiday for employees of elite units of Regardie, which provide power support in the detention of dangerous criminals and the fight against organized crime.

The international community celebrates several significant dates on this day:

The Russian Orthodox Church honors the memory of the Monk Nestor the Chronicler, Pechersky, in the Near Caves (circa 1114). This monk is considered the greatest historian and author of the first edition of the “Tale of Bygone Years” – a fundamental work on the history of Ancient Russia. Also in the saints for today are:

On November 9, 2026, Orthodox believers remember several saints at once - the Great Martyr Paraskeva, the Monk Nestor the Chronicler and the Martyr Nestor of Thessaloniki. In the national calendar, this day was called the “Promise Day” or “Paraskev’s Promise Day”. Our ancestors believed that today it is especially important to keep your word, take care of the house and avoid empty promises. We understand what traditions, signs and prohibitions are associated with this date.

The main task of the day is to make a vow

On this day in Russia it was customary to give pledges - voluntary promises before God. People could swear to give up bad habits, do a good deed, help someone in need, or fast for a certain time. It was believed that the promise made on November 9 from a pure heart, has a special force and must be fulfilled. To break a vow is a great sin, which, according to legend, could lead to misfortune.

Women sometimes gave special vows in honor of St. Paraskeva: for example, to weave a veil for the icon of the Mother of God overnight, after which one could make a wish.

What to do on November 9th

What not to do on November 9th

November 9, 2026 is the day when the word has a special force. If you want to meet the winter fully equipped and attract good luck, take time for home, family and good deeds, and it is better to refrain from empty vows and quarrels.

In the national calendar, this day is known as the Dawn of Paraskeva. There was a strict custom: from November 9 to 10, a woman vowed in deep silence and full concentration to perform some difficult work (for example, weaving a canvas or knitting a thing). It was believed that for such diligence the Great Martyr Paraskeva would fulfill the coveted wish of the petitioner or send health to her loved ones. If there was a sick person in the house, they tried to ensure complete peace, believing that silence on this day has healing power.

The highlights of the day:

The ninth of November is marked by people bearing the names Alexander, Artemy, Gerasim, German, Ivan, Irina, Zosima, Leonid, Matrona, Mikhail, Nikolai, Pavel and Peter. This list refers to the Orthodox name day. Nameday is the day of remembrance of the saint, in whose honor a person was named at baptism, so for each name on this day there is a heavenly patron.

People from November 9, when the church honors the memory of St. Nestor the Chronicler, associate the idea of people born on this date as attentive to the past and prone to the word. They are also credited with prudence and slowness in judgment, the ability to see the connection of events and appreciate order in affairs, and also the gift of the narrator, thanks to which such people become guardians of family legends and home chronicles.

Nestor of Thessaloniki, also called Nestor of Thessaloniki, was an early Christian saint and martyr who suffered for his faith in the late III and early IV centuries in the city of Thessaloniki, known in Russia as Thessaloniki, and now it is Thessaloniki in Greece. He was a young disciple of the Great Martyr Demetrius of Thessaloniki and became famous for coming to the gladiatorial arena against the imperial strongman Leah, defeated him and accepted a martyr’s death. The memory of St. Nestor in the Orthodox tradition is celebrated on November 9, which corresponds to October 27 in the old style.

Origin and name

The name Nestor has Greek roots. In the Christian tradition, it is often associated with the meaning of “homecoming”, recalling the gospel parable of the prodigal son and the return of man to God through repentance. The nicknames "Solunsky" and "Thessaloniki" indicate the same place - the city of Thessalonica, which the Slavs called the Sun. The first name reflects the Slavic form of the name of the city, the second - Greek. So in church tradition it is customary to designate saints whose life and feat are connected with a particular city.

Historical context

St. Nestor lived during the period when the Roman Empire carried out large-scale persecution of Christians. According to life tradition, he suffered during the reign of Emperor Maximian, co-ruler of Diocletian, about 306. The persecutions of that time were aimed at the eradication of the Christian faith, and the confession of Christ often meant a death sentence. It was in this situation that the feat of the young Saloon Christian was accomplished.

Disciple of St. Demetrius

Nestor was a devout Christian youth from Thessalonica in Macedonia and a disciple of Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki. When his mentor was imprisoned, Nestor came there to listen to his instructions and strengthened his faith through conversations and prayers. This spiritual connection with Demetrius played a decisive role in his fate: it was to his teacher that he turned for blessing before the mortal duel.

Gladiator Games and Leah's Challenge

On the occasion of the emperor’s arrival in Thessaloniki, gladiatorial games were held. Not only professional strongmen were brought to the arena: Christians were supposed to compete - women, old people, ordinary citizens-craftsmen. Only the winner left the ring alive. A certain German Lius, the favorite fighter of the emperor, defeated all and threw the defeated from the platform on sharp spears. Seeing Leah killing Christians, Nestor decided to fight him. He went to Dimitri in prison to ask for his prayers and blessings. The saint overshadowed the young man with the sign of the cross and said, “Lia will conquer and you will suffer for Christ yourself!”

Victory and martyrdom

Strengthened by the almighty power of God, the Christian youth defeated Leah to the shame of the pagans and threw him from the platform on the spears. This victory was won not by the strength of muscles, but by the strength of faith and prayer, and became an open confession of Christianity in the face of pagan Rome. The enraged emperor, learning that the victor was a Christian and a disciple of Saint Demetrius, ordered the immediate execution of the saint. Nestor was immediately beheaded by the sword. According to legend, the body of the martyr was thrown into the sea, but the Christians managed to find it and buried with honor next to the tomb of the Great Martyr Demetrius of Solun, whose spiritual son he was.

Honor and day of remembrance

Saint Nestor is venerated in the Orthodox Church as a martyr. His memory is celebrated on November 9, and according to the old style – on October 27. In the Russian Orthodox Church, the memory of the Martyr Nestor is celebrated together with the memory of the Great Martyr Demetrius of Thessaloniki on November 8, when the churches remember the feat of both saints, inseparably linked in their lives. In Thessaloniki, on the site of his feat, the saint is revered as a local venerable. Already in the first centuries, healings and miracles were performed at his tomb, and the name of the martyr entered the church shrines.

The spiritual meaning of the feat

The victory of Nestor over Leah is understood in church tradition not as a triumph of physical strength, but as a triumph of faith over pagan violence. He did not fight out of pride, but out of love for his neighbors, he won not with weapons, but with prayer and hope in God. His act became the preaching of Christianity before a multitude of witnesses, and he accepted death as a testimony of the truth, without denying Christ. The feat of Nestor is especially instructive for young people: the young man, who had wavered in faith even yesterday, at the decisive hour did not hesitate to go to a duel with the famous strongman and won, because his heart was strengthened by the prayer and blessing of the spiritual mentor. This example shows that faith gives a power beyond all human power.

Who and what does the saint help

Martyr Nestor is prayed for courage and firmness in faith, for help in the fight against temptations, for protection from violence and injustice. He is approached by warriors and athletes, young men preparing for important trials, and parents asking for a good temper for their children. The saint is considered the patron saint of those who face injustice and violence, as well as the patron saint of warriors and young men. In the folk tradition, the martyr Nestor is revered as an assistant in teaching and craft: the young men asked him for diligence and firmness of spirit, going to master military work or other difficult skill. This tradition is still alive today – parents give the icon of the saint to their sons before entering educational institutions and service. The saint also helps in everyday trials: when passing exams, at sports competitions, in difficult situations at the service - wherever you need to gather will and not give in to fear.

You can pray to the saint before his icon at home or in the temple, in your own words or church prayers: “Holy Martyr Nestor, pray to God for us.” It is good to read the tropar and kondak to the saint, and on the day of remembrance to attend the service. Turning to the martyr, it is useful to recall the circumstances of his exploit: Nestor went out to fight not for fame and profit, but for the sake of truth, defending the trampled faith. Therefore, in our requests, it is important to seek God’s truth, not our own benefit.

Iconography

On icons, the martyr Nestor is depicted as a young man in military armor, often with a cross in his hand - a sign of confession of faith, and with a sword or spear as a warrior of Christ. Sometimes near the saint write the Great Martyr Demetrius of Solun, his heavenly mentor. The image of a young warrior-martyr reminds us that true strength is not in muscles and weapons, but in faith and courage of spirit. There is also a life iconography of the saint, where next to his image are depicted scenes of a duel with Leah and a martyr's death. Such icons help to better understand the feat of the saint and serve as a visual instruction for young believers. Ancient images of the martyr are known, in particular a fresco of the twelfth century in the church of St. Nicholas in Castoria, North Macedonia.

Reverence in the Russian Tradition

The name of the saint was worn by many ascetics of subsequent centuries - from the chronicler St. Nestor to the New Martyrs of the twentieth century, which indicates the deep veneration of the Solun martyr in the Russian tradition. The icon of the Martyr Nestor is placed in the home iconostasis next to the image of the Great Martyr Demetrius of Thessaloniki, in the room of a young man or student, in the workplace - as a blessing for honest work and protection from injustice. The icon is given to young people on coming of age, soldiers and defenders of the Fatherland, athletes and all who are preparing for important trials - the saint helps not to lose heart and win with the power of faith.

Nestor of Thessaloniki is one of the early Christian martyrs, whose feat was a vivid testimony of unshakable faith in an era of cruel persecution. His life and death have inspired believers for more than a thousand and a half years, reminding them of the strength of spirit that overcomes fear and violence. A young disciple of St. Demetrius of Thessaloniki, he received the blessing of a mentor, defeated the imperial strongman and accepted death for Christ, leaving an example that faith gives a power superior to all human power.

The ninth of November in the popular calendar bears the name of the "Promise Day" or "Promise on Paraskeva" - and the main custom of this date was to give before God a voluntary promise that cannot be broken. People gave up bad habits, undertook to perform difficult work, give alms or help a neighbor, and women sometimes promised to weave a veil for the icon of the Mother of God overnight, after which they made a wish. It was believed that the word said on November 9 from a pure heart, acquires special force, so it was taken extremely seriously: the person who broke his vow, according to legend, was waiting for great misfortunes, and the woman who did not keep her promise, others could not talk for forty days.

The second important tradition of the day was the preparation of the house for winter: the housewives salted cabbage, cooked jam from late berries, dried roots and herbs, checked supplies, insulated huts and barns to meet frosts fully armed. At the same time, cleaning on this day had a special meaning - the washed floor, according to legend, carried away the negative from the house, and getting rid of unnecessary things helped to calm down thoughts. In the evening, families gathered at a common table: the older generation told the children ancient legends, and quarrels and harsh words tried to prevent, because they, as their ancestors believed, destroyed the grace of the day and could attract trouble to the house.

Finally, on November 9, it was customary to think about neighbors and those who need support: people went to church, remembered the vows given a year ago, and assessed whether they were fulfilled, visited the lonely and infirm, prayed for the success of children in school - Nestor Chronicle was considered the patron saint of all who study. It was forbidden to refuse help on this day, as well as to give empty promises. But from hard work, laundry, garbage removal and work with sharp objects unnecessarily tried to refrain – the day was intended for peace, reflection and good deeds, not for fuss.

November 9, 2026 at 10:02 Moscow time will happen New Moon. The moon will be in the sign of Scorpio (the waning phase is the energy of renewal and reset). It's a rare and powerful day: The new moon in Scorpio is a time of deep transformations, hidden processes and planting seeds for the future. The day requires caution in words and actions, but gives a strong impulse for inner work.

Aries (21.03–19.04)

Taurus (20.04-20.05)

Twins (21.05–20.06)

Cancer (21.06–22.07)

Lion (23.07–22.08)

Virgo (23.08-22.09)

Libra (23.09–22.10)

Scorpio (23.10–21.11)

Sagittarius (22.11-21.12)

Capricorn (22.12-19.01)

Aquarius (20.01-18.02)

Pisces (19.02-20.03)

The new moon in Scorpio is the point of maximum compression and concentration of energy. Scorpio manages transformation, death and rebirth, secrets, other people’s resources and deep psychological processes. On this day, intuition increases, but secretiveness, suspicion and the desire to control also increases. The waning moon adds the energy of cleansing and getting rid of excess – this is the time of “burning bridges” and liberation from the old.

The main effects of the day:

How to behave

The main rule of the day: “Let go of the old, make room for the new.” Do not act today, but observe and plan.”.

This phenomenon will begin at 10:02 Moscow time.

To cut hair and nails on November 9, 2026, when the New Moon in Scorpio coincides with the waning Moon, the decision is ambiguous: on the one hand, the waning Moon is traditionally considered favorable for cutting nails and hair, since it symbolizes getting rid of excess and slowing down growth, which helps to keep the shape and accuracy longer, and the Scorpio enhances the effect of renewal and purification; on the other hand, the New Moon itself (especially at 10:02 Moscow time) is a “dark” phase, when astrologists do not recommend starting new affairs and intervening in the energy cycle without the Novogetirovaniye procedure, it is not particularly suitable for today, and does not use the second one’s one’s time to cleanse, and does not make a difficult procedure for today, and does not even the nightly, but rather than to do it with the day’s day’s day’s day’s day’s purification.

November 9, 2026 in the numerological dimension is revealed through the number of days, which consists of the date: 9 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 21, and then 2 + 1 = 3. The trio is a number of creativity, self-expression, communication and ease, but this time it falls into the rigid framework of Scorpio and New Moon, which creates an interesting paradox: the energy of the trio is attracted to conversations, contacts and the generation of ideas, while the Scorpio and the dark phase of the moon require silence, depth and inner work. Therefore, it is better to use the day not for external communication, but for creativity “on the table”, diary entries, planning and working with the subconscious – the three gives inspiration, and the Scorpio gives depth, and together they create a powerful potential for insights that are not yet worth publishing.

The number 3 in numerology is traditionally associated with speech, writing, and social connections, and on November 9, this is especially subtle: any words spoken or written today have an increased weight, because the Scorpio Moon gives them latent power and long-lasting consequences. This is a great day to write a letter to yourself, to formulate intentions for the next lunar month, to disassemble old notes and diaries – everything related to processing information and turning chaos into structure will go easily. But public speeches, disputes, gossip and rash promises today it is better to exclude: the three can tempt chatter, but Scorpio does not forgive careless words, and what was said on the New Moon can return in an unexpected way.

Finally, the combination of the number 3 with the waning Moon in Scorpio sets the main vector of the day - purification through creativity and liberation through self-expression. Three helps to let go of the old not through pain, but through play, lightness and humor: write a list of what you want to get rid of, draw your transformation, come up with a ritual of goodbye to the past – any creative form of working with internal processes will be especially effective today. The numerology of the day does not support financial decisions (the troika is not about money, and the Scorpio is not about quick deals), but it supports everything related to learning, self-education and the development of speech - reading, courses, languages, work with texts. Use the number 3 as a soft transformation tool, and Scorpio and New Moon as a protective cocoon in which this transformation can safely occur.

Dreams on the night of November 9, 2026 fall into a unique astrological framework: the New Moon in Scorpio, which will come at 10:02 Moscow time, means that the night before is the last hours of the “dark” phase, when the Moon has not yet renewed, and Scorpio maximizes all the hidden, depressed and unspoken. It is believed that dreams on such a night are rarely literal - they work as a cipher, revealing what you have long tried to ignore: old grievances, fears, unfinished situations, toxic attachments. The Scorpio Moon makes dreams intense, emotionally intense and often associated with themes of water, cellars, mirrors, other people's homes, losses and rebirth, and the waning phase gives them a purifying character - everything that dreams, most likely, indicates not the future, but what it is time to free yourself from. If the dream was disturbing, do not take it as a prediction: in the New Moon in Scorpio, the subconscious mind simply “drops” the accumulated emotional load, and the correct reaction is not to be frightened, but to write down the dream and calmly analyze what feelings it caused and what sphere of life they are associated with.

From a numerological point of view, the night of November 9 is also colored by the number 9 - the number of completions, results and releases, which, combined with the date 9.11.2026 (which gives a total of three after 21) creates an interesting layer: nine is responsible for final lessons and goodbye to the past, and three - for how this experience will be expressed and meaningful. Dreams of this night can come in the form of dialogues, stories, symbolic scenes with the participation of other people - this is the work of the number 3, which translates the deep scorpion processes into the language of images and words. Especially significant are dreams in which you lose something, find, write, say or hear other people's words: nine suggests that the plot of the dream indicates the completion of the cycle, and three - that the comprehension of what happened is best given through creativity, diary or conversation with a loved one. A dream on the night of November 9, 2026, is not a prophecy, but a mirror of internal transformation, and its main value is not in trying to “unravel the future”, but in an honest answer to the question “what I am willing to let go to move on.”.

On November 9, Scorpions are born.
