What is the holiday today: October 9, 2026

According to the Orthodox calendar, October 9 (September 26 in the Julian style) marks the Repose of the Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian. He is one of the twelve apostles, a beloved disciple of Christ, the author of the Gospel of John, Revelation (Apocalypse) and three synodical epistles.

This day is also a day of remembrance

In the Catholic tradition on this day remember St. Dionysius (from the end of the VIII century).

The ninth of October 2026 is Friday. Orthodox believers recall the repose of the apostle and evangelist John the Theologian, whom church tradition calls the “apostle of love.” In the national calendar, this day is known as Ivan the Theologian, Ivan the Autumn, Ivan the Putnik and Whisper the Intercession.

John the Theologian is one of the twelve apostles, the closest disciple of Jesus Christ, the author of the Gospel of John, the three cathedral epistles and Revelation (Apocalypse). Church tradition calls him the “Apostle of Love.” He is the only one of the twelve apostles who did not accept a martyr’s death, but peacefully departed to the Lord at the beginning of the second century at the age of more than a hundred years.

Origin and family

John was born in the first century in Galilee, in the north of modern Israel. His father was Zebedee, his mother Salome. According to church legend, Salome was the daughter of Joseph the Betrothal from her first marriage, so her children were related to Jesus Christ. John’s older brother was the future Apostle James.

The family lived near the Galilee, or Gennisaret, lake and earned fishing. One day Christ passed by the lake and saw Zebedee with his sons in a boat. James and John were repairing fishing nets. Jesus called the brothers to leave their father, their old life and follow him.

Christ's closest disciple

Over time, John became one of the closest disciples of the Savior. Together with Peter and James, he was present at events not all the apostles witnessed. When Jairus, the synagogue chief’s daughter, died, John saw Jesus approach the girl, take her by the hand, and bring her back to life.

The apostle accompanied Jesus to the mountain, where one of the central events of the Gospel story, the Transfiguration, took place. This is the appearance of the disciples of the divine glory of Christ even before His suffering and Resurrection.

At the Last Supper, John was beside the Son of God and, at Peter’s request, asked him which disciple would betray the Master. Later, after Jesus’ arrest, John followed him and found himself in the high priest’s courtyard, where the first interrogations took place.

When the day of the Crucifixion came, most of the disciples left Jesus for fear of arrest, but John came to Calvary. At the Cross he stood beside the Virgin, and Christ instructed the disciple to take care of His Mother. The morning after the Resurrection, he and Peter hurried to the tomb, when Mary Magdalene reported that the stone from the entrance was rolled away.

Preaching and miracles

According to church tradition, the apostle fulfilled the promise given to Jesus: he remained close to the Virgin Mary and did not leave Jerusalem until Her Dormition. In 50 he participated in the Apostolic Council, and only after 58 he went to preach in Asia Minor. Along with him went his student Prokhor.

During the voyage, a strong storm rose, the ship crashed. All the people on board reached the shore, only John disappeared into the sea. Fourteen days later, Prokhor stopped at a seaside village and saw a great wave throw ashore a living and unharmed apostle.

On reaching Ephesus, John began to preach Christianity among the locals. Church tradition connects this period with numerous healings and miracles. The number of followers of the new faith increased, and the apostle himself became one of the central figures of the Christian communities of Asia Minor.

During the persecution of Christians, the apostle was captured and taken to Rome for execution. According to legend, he drank a deadly poison, but survived, and then left the boiler with boiling oil unharmed. John was exiled to the island of Patmos in the Aegean Sea. Prokhor went into exile with his teacher.

Revelation and the Gospel

It is with Patmos that the church tradition connects the appearance of the Revelation of John the Theologian, or Apocalypse, the last book of the New Testament. According to legend, the apostle received a revelation about the future, after which he dictated the text to Prokhor. In it, through a complex system of prophetic images, he reported on the fate of the Church, the struggle between good and evil, the Second Coming of Christ and the completion of earthly history.

In 96, Emperor Domitian was assassinated and the Roman throne occupied Nerva. The new ruler stopped the persecution and freed the exiled Christians. John began to prepare for his return from Patmos to Ephesus.

Upon learning of his impending departure, the local Christians asked John to leave them a written exposition of Christian teaching. Then the apostle with Prochorus retired to a deserted hill. After three days of fasting and prayer, he began to dictate, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Thus, according to the life, one of the four canonical Gospels was written down – the Gospel of John. For this, the Church gave the apostle the name of the Theologian.

Returning to the city, Prokhor rewrote the text. It was decided to leave a copy to the Christians of Patmos, and take the original record with them.

The Apostle's End

In Ephesus, John continued to preach and instruct believers. The apostle lived to a very old age, life says that he was more than a hundred years old. He is considered to be the only one of the Twelve apostles whose life did not end with a martyr’s execution.

With the death of the saint is associated with an unusual tradition. Sensing the approach of death, John the Theologian early in the morning went beyond Ephesus with seven disciples, among whom was Prochorus. The apostle chose a place for burial and ordered to dig a tomb in the shape of a cross.

When she was ready, John prayed, said goodbye to the disciples and lay down in her. At his request, the disciples first covered him with earth to his knees, then to his neck, after which they covered his face with a plate and completely covered the grave. Returning to Ephesus, the disciples told other Christians what had happened. They came to the burial place and opened the tomb, but the body of John was not found in it.

According to the church tradition, every year at the place of the burial of the apostle appeared thin ashes. Believers gathered it and considered it a shrine with which cases of healing from diseases were associated.

The Church celebrates not the death of the apostle, but the repose - "the transfer, transition and transfer from one place to another, from earth to heaven, from the tomb to paradise." Tradition says that corruption did not touch the body of the apostle, and he himself "is still alive, and does not retreat from the earth, and awaits the second terrible coming of the Lord.".

Reverence in folk tradition

In the national calendar, the day of memory of John the Theologian, October 9, was called Ivan the Theologian, Theologian, Ivan the Autumn. Another name - Ivan Putnik - was associated with the veneration of John as the patron saint of travelers. Before the long road, the saint was asked for a safe path. The ancestors considered night trips and crossings through deserted terrain especially dangerous, the saint was asked to help him safely reach his destination.

The saint was also asked for help in difficult circumstances, for strengthening the family and for reconciliation after grievances. Among the people, John the Theologian was considered the patron saint of icon painters, artists and people of book labor, so he was prayed for his abilities to study and success in creative work.

After the service, the ancestors returned to daily activities. In the southern regions, men completed sowing winter crops and harvesting the remaining crops. Women baked cakes on the holiday, which were treated to guests, passers-by and those in need. Meeting with a stranger on October 9 was perceived as a good sign, an opportunity to show hospitality and mercy.

At the beginning of October was the autumn wedding season. In Ivanovo day in the villages hosted the house of the girl came relatives of the groom to discuss a possible marriage. If the family agreed, guests were invited to the table and treated. When refused, the matchmakers were taken out of the gate. A sign of failed matchmaking could serve and decorated with ribbons pumpkin, which was handed over to the groom.

Iconography

As a rule, John is depicted at an venerable age, in red robe, with an inkwell, a feather and a book in his hands and in the presence of an angel, often an eagle. Sometimes presented young, beardless and long-haired. The eagle is one of the four symbols associated with the vision of the prophet Ezekiel and is traditionally attributed to John.

Meaning for Christianity

John left behind him one of the four canonical Gospels, three conciliar epistles and the book of Revelation. His Gospel differs from the other three, Synoptic, in its deeper theological content. It is in him that the doctrine of God as love is most fully revealed. Hence the name of the apostle is the Theologian, that is, he who speaks about God.

The Revelation of John the Theologian is the only prophetic book in the New Testament part of the Bible. It tells about future events, including the second coming of Christ and the end of the world. The book contains world-famous descriptions of the four horsemen of the apocalypse, seven angels with trumpets, seven signs and disasters, the appearance and death of the Antichrist, as well as the defeat of the devil and the beginning of the kingdom of Christ.

The theologians emphasize that the meaning of the text can be correctly understood only in the context of all Scripture. A feature of many prophetic visions is the principle of combining several historical events, separated by centuries and even millennia, in one vision.

Memorial Day

The Orthodox Church commemorates the repose of the Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian on October 9 in a new style, which corresponds to September 26 according to the Julian calendar. On the same day commemorates the glorification of St. Tikhon, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, glorified by the Church in 1989.

The ninth of October 2026 in the national calendar is named after Ivan the Theologian, Ivan Autumn, Ivan Putnik and Whisper Pokrovny. The nickname Traveler was fixed for this day because the Apostle John the Theologian was revered as the protector of travelers: before the far road, the saint was asked for a safe path, and night trips and crossings through deserted terrain were considered especially dangerous. Crossroads in folk representations were magical places where the traveler could lie in wait for evil spirits, so they tried not to linger on them, especially after dark. By this time, autumn work was being completed in the peasant farm: in the southern regions, winter crops and harvesting of the remaining crop were completed, and after fieldwork they switched to household chores and preparation for winter.

A special place in the tradition of this day was occupied by baking. The hostess baked cakes and treated them to neighbors, passers-by and those in need, and a meeting with a stranger or a poor person was perceived as a good sign and an opportunity to show hospitality and mercy. If the travelers could not meet, the pastries were given to the birds. In the old days, on this day, the oven was necessarily drowned, believing that the fire attracted prosperity, health and well-being to the house, and they tried to finish hard work before lunch, so as not to incur “forty troubles”. At the beginning of October, the autumn wedding season fell, and in Ivanovo day in the villages were arranged by the children: the groom’s relatives came to the girl’s house to discuss a possible marriage. If the family agreed, guests were invited to the table and treated, and if they refused, the treat was taken out of the gate; a pumpkin decorated with ribbons could serve as a sign of failed matchmaking, which was handed to the groom’s side.

The day of Ivan the Theologian was associated with a number of prohibitions. The main thing concerned quarrels and profanity: the day of veneration of the saint, whom the Christian tradition called the apostle of love, the ancestors tried to spend without conflicts and offenses, believing that the quarrel can deprive a person of the patronage of John and permanently disturb the peace in the house. It was not recommended to refuse a traveler or someone in need of all possible help, eat onions and garlic, so as not to attract nightmares and skin inflammations, without the need to pick up sharp objects, wear old shoes, arrange noisy feasts and abuse alcohol. The night from October 9 to 10 was considered a time of prophetic dreams in which you can get a hint from deceased relatives, and according to the weather of this day, ancestors judged the future: the first snow promised winter in forty days, rain - prolonged damp weather for three weeks, rain with snow - three strong thaws in January, and warm and sunny October 9 - cold and rainy June the following year.

On October 9, 2026, the waning moon is in the sign of Virgo. This is the period of completing cycles, summing up and restoring order. Virgo is a sign of earth, symbolizing practicality, discipline, analysis and service. The waning moon in Virgo increases the craving for purity, systematization and getting rid of everything superfluous - both in deeds and in thoughts. The day favors routine work, cleaning, health care, but requires caution in emotional impulses: criticality and pickyness can come to the fore.

Aries (March 21 – April 19)

Taurus (20 April – 20 May)

Twins (May 21 – June 20)

Cancer (June 21 – July 22)

Leo (July 23 – August 22)

Virgo (23 August – 22 September)

Libra (September 23 – October 22)

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)

Capricorn (22 December – 19 January)

Aquarius (20 January – 18 February)

Pisces (19 February – 20 March)

The waning moon in Virgo is a time of completion, purification and restoration of order. Virgo, the sign of the earth ruled by Mercury, symbolizes practicality, discipline, analysis and service. On this day, energy is aimed at completing what has begun, getting rid of excess and bringing life into the system.

How does the waning moon affect Virgo:

How to behave:

October 9, 2026 is a day of practical affairs, order and completion. Make it useful: bring cleanliness, complete what you started, take care of your health and do not succumb to criticism. The waning moon in Virgo will help get rid of excess and prepare for a new cycle.

Today, October 9, 2026, when the waning Moon is in the sign of Virgo, cutting hair and nails is considered quite a favorable procedure - a growing or waning Moon in Virgo is traditionally associated with strengthening the roots, improving the structure of hair and nails, as well as getting rid of everything superfluous, so a visit to a hairdresser or nail care will not only harm, but also help to give the hairstyle a more well-groomed look, and nails a neat form; however, it is worth considering that Virgo is a sign of practicality and nails, as a sign of radical beauty, which will be easily abandoned in advance, if you do not want to choose this color and improve your preference for the classic beauty.

The day number of October 9, 2026 is calculated by adding up all the digits of the date: 9 + 1 + 0 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 20, and then 2 + 0 = 2. Thus, the vibrating number of this day is the two - a symbol of partnership, balance, patience and subtle intuition. In combination with the waning moon in Virgo, the energy of the two acquires a particularly practical hue: today it is important not so much to act alone as to find points of contact with others, complete what has begun in a pair or team and carefully listen to details that usually escape attention. Two does not tolerate fuss and pressure, so it is better to spend the day in a calm, measured rhythm, avoiding conflicts and hasty decisions.

For people whose fate number or personal year is associated with a deuce, nine or six, October 9, 2026 can become especially significant: fateful meetings, reconciliation with long-standing opponents, successful negotiations and signing agreements that will bring stability in the future are likely. However, the vibrancy of the two requires honesty and diplomacy - any attempts to manipulate, pressure or trick will turn against the initiator himself. People with dominant numbers one, five or eight should be careful: their impulsiveness and desire for change can come into conflict with the slow energy of the day, so it is better to focus on finishing old things, not starting new ones.

The numerological advice of the day is as follows: focus on what has already begun, bring at least one important thing to the end, restore order in finances and agreements, and most importantly - be gentler and more attentive to loved ones. The two remind us that true strength today is not in the pressure, but in the ability to listen, negotiate and find a balance between their desires and the needs of others. If you spend this day in accordance with the number 2, it will be a quiet but lasting step to harmony and well-being.

Dreams on the night of October 9, 2026, when the waning moon is in the sign of Virgo, have a special symbolism: they are rarely bright and fantastic, but almost always carry a practical, warning or purifying meaning. Virgo manages order, health, work and everyday details, so in dreams of this period most often pop up everyday stories - cleaning, repair, documents, illness, delays, quarrels because of trifles or, conversely, a pleasant feeling of completeness and purity. If you dream that you are putting things in order, throwing away old things, taking an exam or undergoing a medical examination, this is a sure sign that the subconscious is ready to get rid of accumulated ballast - both emotional and material. The waning moon strengthens the theme of letting go: everything that dreams on this night, rather suggests what it is time to give up, than indicates new beginnings.

Dreams about the body, food, hygiene and minor problems are of particular importance on the night of October 9 - they can reflect a real state of health or signal accumulated stress, which you try not to notice. If you dream that you wash your hands, brush your teeth, cut your nails or take a shower, this is a favorable symbol of cleansing and internal renewal; if you dream of dirt, disorder, spoiled food or lost documents, you should pay more attention to your duties and not postpone the solution of long-overdue issues. Virgo is also associated with criticism, so dreams in which you judge someone or, conversely, feel accused, may indicate excessive severity towards yourself and others. Write down such dreams – they often contain a specific hint about what you need to “fix” in your life to move on with a light heart.

On October 9, Libras are born.

The air will warm up to 16 degrees, cloudy and rainy.

The air will warm up to 13 degrees, precipitation.

Geomagnetic activity on October 9, 2026 is expected to be 2 points. These are weak perturbations of the magnetic field, which will not affect the atmosphere and sensitive people.
