Mastery on the ground: Chernyan agronomist became a finalist of the contest “Best in profession”
What is it like to be a modern farmer?

Alexander Ushanev works as an agronomist for the support and execution of technologies of the production site "Malotroitsky" of Rusagro-Invest in the Chernyansky district of the Belgorod region. He was among the finalists of the competition “Best in profession”. At the heart of the achievement is the desire for constant professional development.
Hard work
An agronomist should have deep specialized knowledge in botany, soil science, agrochemistry, analytical thinking, have practical and managerial skills. Today, such a specialist manages the entire cycle of growing crops. He draws up sowing plans, calculates the amount of seeds and fertilizers, monitors the condition of the soil, reacts to frost or pests, and organizes, coordinates the work of field teams, mechanics and laboratory technicians.
“I personally check how technological operations are performed: the depth of sowing, the uniformity of fertilizer application and, if necessary, give instructions to correct errors,” Alexander Ushanev said.
He also keeps accounting logs, compiles technological maps, electronic databases, for example, the history of fields, reports on yields and the effectiveness of measures taken.
A modern agronomist should be able to use satellite monitoring of fields, precision farming systems, surveillance from drones, specialized software for data analysis. To successfully cope with all tasks, he has to constantly learn and implement advanced technologies.
Engineer's son
Alexander Ushanev grew up in the village of Aleksandrovka, Volokovo district in the family of a mechanizer and from childhood was in the fields. After graduating from the Novooskol Agricultural Technical School and serving in the army, he studied at the Belgorod State Agrarian University and 10 years ago began his career as an agronomist.
Today, under his leadership there are almost 30 thousand hectares of land in Chernyansk, Novooskol and Krasno districts. Work on the sites are assistants, and the Belgorod citizen controls the overall process.
Alexander Ushanev considers the weather to be the most difficult in his work, calling her the most important boss. Both sowing and harvesting require favorable conditions, especially the absence of precipitation.
In winter, you also do not have to rest: this is the time to sum up the results of the last season and draw up a strategy for next year. Specialists continue to monitor the condition of winter crops, look at seedlings, check the survival of plants.
