Find a wallet, phone or other valuable item? Do not rush to take the find for yourself. Why left unattended property still belongs to its owner and what should be done with the found thing, told the correspondent of the agency “Minsk-Novosti” in the police Department of Leninsky district.

The police are often addressed by citizens who found missing things left unattended. Law enforcement officers establish the circumstances of the incident, search for property and persons who took it. However, by the time they are detained, money has often been spent and other valuables sold.
Deputy head of the Lenin police department of Minsk – head of the criminal police Timofey Doroshevich gave two examples when left unattended things were appropriated by other people.
- In the first case, the victim forgot the bornet at the bus stop. When he returned, she was no longer there. Investigators found that someone else’s property was taken by a 55-year-old employee of one of the capital’s enterprises. She spent money in the amount of 300 BYN for personal needs, and threw away the documents, Doroshevich said. In the second case, the man accidentally left a wallet with 440 BYN on the counter in the store. This was taken advantage of by a 65-year-old Minnesotan. He spent the money on food and alcohol.
Lost or temporarily left unattended property does not become a draw. Forgotten brosets, wallets, phones and other things have owners.
If you find someone else's thing, first of all you should make an attempt to return it to the owner. When the find is found in a public place, you can try to independently establish the owner or transfer the thing to the employees of the organization on the territory of which it was found: employees of the store, the administration of the institution, the driver of public transport or the duty officer at the metro station.
- If it was not possible to establish the owner, it should be reported to the police about the find, Doroshevich concluded.
