The Church on October 11, 2026 remembers the Monk Chariton the Confessor, who lived at the turn of the third and fourth centuries in Iconia. In the national calendar, this date was called Khariton Day and was considered one of the most dangerous of the year. According to legends, the evil forces at this time freely walked on the ground and waited for the careless, so people tried not to leave the house needlessly and spent the evening with the family.
Saint Chariton suffered for his faith during one of the persecutions against Christians. He was strengthened in spirit by the example of the holy First Martyr Thekla, a native of his native city. The saint openly denounced the pagan gods and firmly confessed Christ, suffered cruel torments, but remained alive according to the providence of God. When the persecution subsided, he was released and devoted the rest of his life to the service of the Lord.
On the way to Jerusalem, Chariton fell into the hands of robbers. They tied him up and threw him into a cave, intending to later crack down, and they themselves went fishing. In anticipation of death, the saint prayed fervently. At this time, a snake crawled into the cave and poisoned the wine in the vessel standing there. Returning, the robbers drank a poisoned drink and died. Chariton, thanking God, remained ascetic in the place of miraculous salvation. He distributed the stolen gold to the beggars and monasteries, and in a robber cave he arranged a church around which the Faran Lavra grew over time. He later founded two more monasteries. According to legend, Chariton made the order of monastic tonsure, and died in old age.
