A few lupins, a footy, a hogweed. Residents of the Kola Arctic told what dangerous plants want to start fighting more actively
Employees of the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Murmansk region reported on the preparation of a draft resolution of the regional government. The document will approve a list of dangerous invasive plants for which measures will be taken to detect, prevent the spread and destroy.

The scientific substantiation of the list was prepared by specialists of the Polar-Alpine Botanical Garden-Institute named after N. A. Aurorin of the Kola Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Scientists have been studying the alien flora of the Murmansk region for more than thirty years. They analyzed the invasive potential of all 550 known alien vascular plant species in the region.
As a result, six plants are proposed to be classified as dangerous invasive species:
The list took into account the invasive potential of plants, their impact on ecosystems and local species, the danger to humans, as well as possible economic consequences.
The fact is that, for example, Sosnovsky hogweed already forms large foci in Murmansk, Apatity, Kirovsk, Kandalaksha and other settlements in the region. The plant is dangerous to humans and can spread quickly.
The approval of the list will identify plant species for which measures should be taken in the region to identify, prevent the spread and destroy them. This will form the basis for further work to combat dangerous invasive species.
The draft resolution provides for the approval of the list of dangerous invasive plants that extends to the entire territory of the Murmansk region, with the exception of cases provided for by federal law. A separate list for specially protected natural areas of regional and local significance will also be approved.
