Russian Railways is working on a high-speed highway (HSR) project Moscow - Nizhny Novgorod - Kazan - Yekaterinburg. The joint action plan for its implementation was discussed by the Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region Gleb Nikitin and the head of Russian Railways Oleg Belozerov at a working meeting in Moscow.
Nikitin said that after the launch of the Moscow-Nizhny Novgorod highway, the region will be able to integrate into a single dynamic agglomeration and become closer to the capital and additional development opportunities. According to him, young scientists, IT specialists and entrepreneurs will be able to build a career at the federal level without leaving Nizhny Novgorod, enterprises will have direct access to the capital markets and investors, and the research and educational center will have access to the resources of the metropolis. HSR, the governor is sure, will ensure the growth of GRP, technological renewal of production and a new quality of life for Nizhny Novgorod residents.
Oleg Belozerov noted that close joint work with the regions of the route will allow finding optimal solutions to the most complex engineering, technical, economic and legal issues. The implementation of the project will create a basis for expanding the national high-speed traffic network, increase the connectivity of territories, reduce travel time between the largest cities and give an impetus to the socio-economic development of subjects along the route.
The development of railway communication was also discussed at the meeting. Nikitin said that the Nizhny Novgorod-Moscow route is steadily growing in popularity: in December 2025, a new high-speed Burevestnik train began to run on it, and in 2026 more than 3 million 300 thousand passengers used high-speed trains - 18.2% more than in the same period of 2025.
The project to extend the Myza-Kstovo city train remains important for the region: the demand for the route is estimated at almost 2.5 million people a year. The project received a positive conclusion of the state examination and is already provided with rolling stock. Kstovo in 2025 became part of the urban district of Nizhny Novgorod.
