Nizhny Novgorod doctors rescued a child with a lightning-fast form of generalized meningococcal infection, septic shock and Waterhouse-Friderixen syndrome.
On the first day of illness, the girl’s temperature jumped to 40 degrees, and the body instantly covered with a hemorrhagic rash. In an extremely serious condition, she was taken to the infectious disease hospital No. 23 of Nizhny Novgorod. Organs began to refuse one after another: the child was transferred to ventilators and began complex anti-shock therapy, and tests confirmed meningococcus.
Because of the deadly risk, resuscitators used special filter traps to clean the blood: the Efferon column attracted bacterial poisons like a magnet, and the CytoSorb system extracted an excess of inflammatory proteins that the immune system itself secreted. This allowed to buy time, reduce inflammation three times and prevent organ failure. Doctors also managed to cope with foci of tissue necrosis.
Consciousness to the child returned without a neurological deficit, the patient was transferred to the PIMU Burn Center for skin plastication.
Natalia Soloshenko, chief doctor of infectious diseases hospital No. 23, said that the child was saved thanks to the coordinated work of the interdisciplinary team of doctors of ICB No. 23 and the University Hospital PIMU, and the main success factors were early hospitalization and the use of hemosorption.
The hospital noted that until recently, the mortality rate in such conditions was 100%.
