“Remain an area of peace and stability.” Shpakovsky on Belarus’ position in dialogue with the United States

A new round of Belarusian-American talks was held in Minsk. The format of these contacts and the principled position of our country on the air of the talk show “Budni” on the YouTube channel “SBTV” and “Alfa Radio” explained the Deputy of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Shpakovsky, writes sb.by.

Alexander Shpakovsky noted:

- Some time ago, I participated in the Inter-Parliamentary Union conference in Samarkand. It is a broad structure that unites parliaments of different countries. Some Western colleagues have a fairly balanced point of view. There are those who approach the current situation calmly and judiciously. We can build a kind of mutually respectful dialogue with them, despite the fact that we have a number of positions on which we categorically disagree. The bottom line is that either at the strategic level we find a common language: we recognize each other’s right to different models of development, recognize certain civilizational boundaries – if we talk about the existential conflict that Russia has developed with the Western world – or we slide further into World War III. If a structure called Ukraine burns, what countries will the fire spread to? Do Hungarians, Slovaks, Bulgarians, Czechs, Poles want wars in our region? I don't think so.

Alexander Shpakovsky stressed that the activities of the Belarusian leadership are aimed at preventing escalation in the region:

- Our President is working to ensure that there is no war not only in Belarus, but in our entire region. We have our own national objectives, which are correlated with common sense and with the goals of ensuring regional security. We are building diplomatic communications, including the most complex ones, with those states that for decades have looked at Belarus as an object of their claims. Despite the difference in our potentials, we have repeatedly made it clear to the American counterparts that the Belarusian people are the masters of Belarus. We are lucky to have a leader who does not back down and fights for our interests. We will not allow anyone, not even the hegemon, to dictate their will, to force us to perform any actions that contradict the goals of the sovereign development of Belarus, violate our mentality and threaten security. We have proved this through three decades of sovereign history.

- We've never been fooled by anyone. Though we tried. In these negotiations, we will try to solve tactical tasks. The strategic objective is peace. As the President rightly noted yesterday in his historical excursion, which survived several wars in the first half of the XX century, it is important for Belarus to remain a space of peace and stability in the XXI century. This is one of the most important national priorities.
