The Ministry of Health of Chuvashia told the story of a 68-year-old patient of the Central City Hospital with type II diabetes and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Due to age and chronic diseases, a woman belongs to the group of increased risk of severe respiratory infections. On the recommendation of a therapist, she is vaccinated annually against influenza, and recently vaccinated against pneumococcal infection.
According to the hospital, over the past three seasons, the patient has not suffered a single pneumonia, although she had previously been hospitalized with this disease twice.
“Vaccination is a scientifically based, safe and highly effective method of prevention: it protects a specific person at all stages of life, forms herd immunity and makes a decisive contribution to reducing mortality,” said Tatiana Markelova, chief freelance specialist in therapy at the Ministry of Health of Chuvashia, chief doctor of the Central City Hospital.
