The future saint, who received the name Bartholomew at birth, was born near Rostov in the family of a service boyar. After the death of his parents, the young man went to the Khotkovo-Pokrovsky monastery, but stayed there for a short time. Striving for solitude, he founded a desert on the banks of the river Konchura in the middle of the remote Radonezh boron. At the age of 23, Bartholomew took tonsure with the name Sergius. The monks began to flock to him, and a monastery was formed, later transformed into the Trinity-Sergius Lavra.

Sergius, who became abbot, became famous for humility and hard work. He forbade the brethren to accept alms and ordered the monks to live only from their labor. Later he founded several more monasteries. According to life, the saint performed many miracles. Sergius often reconciled the warring princes, urging them to submit to the Grand Duke of Moscow. By the time of the Battle of Kulikovo, almost all Russian princes recognized the primacy of Dmitry Donskoy. Going to battle, the prince came for a blessing to Sergius, who foretold him victory and released his two monks - Peresvet and Oslyab.

On this day in Russia cut cabbage, harvesting it for the winter, so the day of Sergius was popularly called Kabbage. The housewives knew that you need to salt cabbage with the first frost, otherwise it will sour. Cabbage cakes were served on the table, soy and blueberries were prepared. The second nickname, the Chicken Coop, went to the saint for being considered the keeper of poultry, especially chickens.

The day was devoted to household chores, good deeds and prayer. On this day, the advice was:

The day is associated with many prohibitions, the violation of which, according to legend, could attract trouble. Forbidden:

In 2026, October 8 falls on Thursday, but in the church calendar there is a special date - Pokrovskaya Parental Saturday, which falls on the Saturday before the feast of the Intercession of the Most Holy Mother of God. This is the day of remembrance of the dead. Believers go to cemeteries, clean the graves, leave flowers, put a candle in the temple. One cannot remember the dead with a bad word, remember only the good. It's important to be Christian.

On this day, the weather will determine what winter and spring will be like. Here are the most interesting observations:

On the night of October 8, dreams are considered deep, thick, like autumn fog, but they contain clues. The subconscious does not speak with words, but with images that lead to a new stage.

To dream that you see a road, a bridge, a gate, or a long corridor is a symbol of a new chapter in life. Everything that is left behind is gone forever. If you dream of light breaking through from afar, this is an internal landmark. Even if you seem to be wandering in the dark, the path is already illuminated. This dream says you are in the right direction, you just don’t see the end of the road yet. When you wake up, you may feel like you’ve been to another reality. Don’t dismiss the details of a dream: they’re like a letter from your future self. This dream foreshadows a week of inner growth, purification and quiet rebirth.
