Feed the rhubarb, but leave the crown open

In autumn, rhubarb leaves naturally die off. Completely dry leaves are removed if they lie in a dense moist layer at the base of the bush.
Mature compost is applied around the root zone, without filling the crown and kidneys with a thick layer. Excess moisture and poor gas exchange increase the risk of sublimation and rot.
After rain and thaw, rhubarb should not have water. In a damp low place, it is more useful to improve its withdrawal than to strengthen winter insulation.
Fresh manure is not placed on the crown. In spring, the kidneys should be dense, without soft darkened areas. If rotting is repeated, check the depth of planting and watering.
