Bermuda Triangle: the map lies and the shadows frighten

Three points near Moscow - the Shushmore forest tract, the Lytkarino road and the 66-69th kilometer of the Kyiv highway - have been overgrown with legends for years: there is no connection, navigators unfold the map, and on the sidelines they see figures that should not be there

Bermuda Triangle: the map lies and the shadows frighten

It all starts with something that doesn’t matter at first. The receiver gives a white noise, the phone screen unfolds the map upside down, outside the window - the most ordinary Moscow evening, but after a turn, the air seems to be poured with weight, the light of the headlights knit in the fog, and on an empty roadside, where no one was just there, as if someone was standing. It's not moving. Just looking out. This is how those who swear that they have encountered something inexplicable on the Moscow roads describe the experience.

Such places in the region are recruited for a whole list, and three of them add up to a figure that is called the local Bermuda Triangle. From the official point of view, there is no mysticism in sight here - there are broken asphalt, tired drivers and accident reports. Unofficial - this is not the first ten years.

Let's start with the most deaf and the oldest. The Shushmore tract, located at the junction of the Moscow and Vladimir regions, is not just a corner on the map, but a place that human memory seems to have bypassed. Meshcher thickets, quagmires, overgrown paths, on which no one has walked for a long time. This place has long enjoyed a bad reputation, and not without reason: it is here, if you believe the rumor, people disappeared in whole trains.

So, the local legend assures that in 1885, a member of the Zemstvo council Kuryshkin died here, who came to take work with a peasant Perfilev, who contracted to build a dam on the Kovikha river. After him, if you believe the same tradition, disappeared and the driver Gerasim Kudrin, who was carrying Kuryshkin to the place of work. Two years later, on the Kolomna tract allegedly disappeared a whole train - four carts with iron, drivers and a clerk. Then, according to the same accounts, the postman, surveyor and several peasants disappeared. In total, if you believe the local history records, until 1921 on the old Kolomna tract is collected about nineteen missing.

This information wanders from text to text, and its source is unknown. The very motive of disappearances in these parts has been living in local history for more than a century, but it belongs more to the field of historical legends than to documented chronicles.

Today's anomaly seekers retell the same thing, only in a modern way. The arrow of the compass begins to rush, the navigator confidently shows one thing, and the road leads away completely in the other direction. The traveler walks in a straight line and returns to the same place. Or, instead of a river, it gets to an impenetrable quagmire. To be honest, these evidences do not have any instrumental fixation – these are the stories of tourists and enthusiasts, not the readings of devices. But there are many stories, and they look suspiciously similar to each other.

The explanation, oddly enough, is there. Nearby stretched Lake Smerdyachye, which is considered a meteorite — in the vicinity came melted rocks, and in 2024-2025 the hypothesis was confirmed by geophysicists of Moscow State University, using magnetometry, gravimetry and electrotomography. It's not tradition anymore, it's science.

But the hunch that the territory itself sits on a tectonic fault and that local magnetic disturbances occur in such zones is a scientific hypothesis, which is expressed by individual geologists.

However, the locals have another version: old-timers in low voice talk about the “master of the forest”, leading travelers into the thicket, about the “people of the lakes”, who once worshiped the snake god Ur, and about a giant snake living in a quagmire. This, of course, is pure folklore, an urban legend in its forest version. Believe it or not is a personal matter, but Shushmore is still a place where it is better not to go without preparation.

If Shushmore is a forest anomaly, then the road between Lyubertsy and Lytkarino is an asphalt anomaly, and it is much closer to civilization. The segment is not long, but its reputation is heavy: the roadsides are dotted with wreaths and crosses for years, and in the conversations of local residents behind the track, the nickname “Death Road” was fixed.

Drivers who claim to have experienced strange accidents say surprisingly similar things. At first - fog, but not ordinary, but a wall. Then the car hurls, as if on bare ice, although the window is dry and warm. A person turns the steering wheel, presses the brake, flies into a ditch, and when the dust settles, he sees a figure on the side of the road: a woman in a white dress. He's watching. Or already dissolving. This is a classic story of local folklore: according to the stories of survivors of drivers, at the highway there is a ghost of a girl in a white dress with loose hair, which popular rumor dubbed the bride who died in an accident on the day of the wedding.

Where it came from is also explained differently. The most common version is the legend about the wedding motorcade: allegedly, a car with a groom and a bride was shattered here, the groom climbed out, the bride died, and since then her silhouette appears in front of drivers. The darker version is about the old cemetery, through which a road was allegedly paved. This is pure folklore motif, it has no documentary evidence. Researchers of anomalous phenomena directly call the version with the ghost of the bride a modern myth.

The police do not believe in ghosts. The official “conclusion” is a narrow canvas, turns, excess, inattention; after the appearance of “lying policemen” accidents decreased. These are standard explanations of the traffic police on this site, and they are quite reasonable. Psychological factors sum up their base: “minute sleep”, in which the driver falls on a monotonous road, the brain finishes the picture, the hands do not have time to react. The concept of microsleep in psychology exists, but, as reported, its binding to this site has not been experimentally tested. Why do dozens of different people describe the same woman in white.

And then the most curious thing begins. Lytkarinskaya highway is mainly folklore, the 66-69th kilometer of the Kiev highway near Naro-Fominskaya is the place where the legend received almost official residence. In 2011, billboards lined the road: photos of wrecked cars and the inscription "Attention!" Anomalous zone! 66-69 km. Slow down! 20 dead”. This is a documented fact: the shields really stood, and the word “anomalous” appeared on them not from the mouth of ufologists or from the pages of the yellow press.

The locals, however, read the billboards in their own way - for them it was a confirmation of what they talked about in a low voice for years. But the fact that the road is dangerous here is no longer a legend: according to the traffic police, the cause of the “unexplained” accidents lies in the narrowing of the road in these areas, the absence of breakers, clear markings and poor lighting of the tracks. The road is straight, the accidents are strange, the traffic light is so that because of the bridge you can not see cars waiting for a turn: someone does not have time to slow down, someone “yawns”.

In 2012, the billboards were dismantled - the territory ceded to New Moscow. It's a fact. As for the “ghost car” – a white sedan that allegedly put other drivers under attack and disappeared without a trace from the scene – this is an urban legend that was widely walked on social networks in 2017, but has not received reliable confirmation.

On the roads there is a science: fatigue, monotony, “minute sleep”, poor visibility, high speed. Plus the effect of waiting – a person knows in advance that the place is “dead”, and subconsciously seeks confirmation. This psychological mechanism, although its role on the roads near Moscow no one measured. But there are details that do not fit into the scheme: why in Shushmore, if you believe the legend, whole trains disappeared, why on the Lytkarin highway different people describe the same woman in white. There are no answers, only legends.

And yet they believe this not out of love for horror stories, but because reality here is more terrible than any mysticism. The roads are narrow, the lights are low, the drivers are exhausted. People die not because of ghosts, but because of asphalt, speed and the human factor. But statistics don’t stick to the memory like legend: a woman in white on the curb is more frightening.

The Bermuda Triangle near Moscow is not a point on the map, but three places where fear, road and legend converge too closely. Shushmore, Lytkarinskaya highway, 66-69th kilometer of Kyiv highway. You can laugh at mysticism, you can look for scientific reasons, you can sincerely believe in ghosts. But it is better to just take your foot off the gas pedal. Just in case. Legend is a legend, so as not to find out why things went wrong. And certainly do not understand this at “hundred and twenty kilometers per hour”. Ghosts are ghosts, and the fines have not been canceled yet.
