Notes and prohibitions on October 9: how to spend the day of Ivan the Putnik to avoid trouble
In the national calendar, October 9 celebrates the day of Ivan the Putnik (in the church calendar - the Day of Repose of the Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian)

Traditions on Ivan Putnik: prayers for the road and memorial day
The main tradition of October 9 was connected with the long road. Before going on a journey, believers necessarily prayed to John the Theologian, asking for protection from evil forces, dashing people and bad weather. It was believed that the saint would protect him from wandering and help him return home unharmed.
Crossroads protection. In the old days, crossroads were considered dangerous, “unclean” places. On Ivan Putnik, people tried to pass forks with prayer and never lingered on them.
Saturday of Remembrance (close to the Intercession). During this period, it was also customary to commemorate deceased relatives, pray for their repose and visit cemeteries, preparing graves for winter.
Completion of fieldwork. By October 9, the peasants had completed their winter crops. It was said that after Ivan the Putnik, the land could not be "troubled" more - it goes to winter rest.
What is absolutely impossible to do on October 9?
People's beliefs imposed strict bans on this day, the violation of which, as the ancestors believed, could attract misfortunes:
People's weather signs
According to the weather, Ivan Putnik was judged about the coming winter and the next harvest:
Snow went to Ivan Putnik - winter will finally fall on Pokrov (October 14).
If it rains with snow on this day, then in January you will expect three strong thaws.
If the day was sunny and warm, the next summer will be rainy and cool.
The leaffall passed quickly - the winter will be harsh and frosty; if the leaves stay on the trees for a long time - the winter will come late and will be mild.
At sunset, the sky turned bright pink or yellow - in the coming days, good windy weather will be established.
The year 2026, judging by the astronomical calendar, adds its own characteristics to the day of Ivan the Putnik: the geomagnetic background during this period can be increased, so the people's advice "to spend the day in silence and without fuss" is relevant for both mental and physical health.
