Check soil pH before autumn ash application

Wood ash contains potassium, but at the same time significantly increases the pH. Therefore, before applying it is worth checking the acidity of the soil.

On acidic soil, a moderate dose may be helpful. If the pH is already close to neutral or higher, it is better not to apply ash unnecessarily: excessive alkalization impairs the availability of some trace elements.

Under blueberries, rhododendrons and other acid-loving cultures, ash is not applied. On potatoes, an increase in pH can increase the risk of scab. For the garden, only ash from pure raw wood is used and it is not mixed with ammonium nitrogen fertilizers. If the ash is applied regularly, first measure the pH.
