The latest finds were announced by the Greek Ministry of Culture, Fox News reported. Excavations are underway in Miez, an ancient Macedonian city in northern Greece, where archaeologists have discovered a vast complex known as the Tsar Gymnasium.

For a long time it was believed, based on ancient sources, that there Aristotle taught the young Alexander the Great.

This place was built during the reign of Philip II, the father of Alexander the Great, in the fourth century BC.

Archaeologists began excavations at the site in 2024, gradually discovering evidence of a vast complex where young Macedonians studied, trained and dined.

This year’s excavations focused on the eastern side of the complex, including the Palestra and the Didaskaleion, or study area, where archaeologists discovered lecture halls with stone benches.

According to the Greek Ministry of Culture, one of the most significant discoveries was the three-part complex in Didaskaleion, or the study area.

The room includes a central hallway and two banquet halls with preserved mosaic floors and raised platforms on which dining sofas once stood.

Although the buildings were destroyed by the Romans after the second Battle of Pydna in 148 BC, officials noted that "significant architectural monuments have survived.".

These ruins now give researchers a clearer picture of what education might have looked like for young Macedonian elites.

Alexandra F. Morris, a lecturer in ancient history at Queen's University Belfast, told Fox News Digital that ancient texts link Alexander the Great and Aristotle to Miesa, and archaeological finds support this finding.

“In the ancient text, we find authors like Plutarch basically just a line that says Aristotle taught Alexander in Miez,” Morris told Fox News Digital. But now we have a real building to tell the story, and it’s really exciting.

According to the historian, the evidence makes the identification all the more convincing, although she warned that researchers cannot yet say with certainty that Aristotle trained Alexander in this particular complex.

“There is no inscription here that directly points to this place,” Morris said. I think the identification we have at the moment is a strong argument, but it’s still just an argument that Aristotle potentially trained Alexander here. But the arguments seem to be getting more and more weighty.”.

Morris also points out that learning in the old gym was very different from a normal school day today.

“They went there to exercise during the day,” Morris said. So they competed in sports like pankration, which was a form of wrestling. Then you could go and listen to lectures.” The students also dined and drank together, giving young Macedonian elites the opportunity to forge relationships with their peers.

“They went there to study, but they also learned to build loyal relationships with other members of the elite who were there.” Thus, ties were established, and this helped Alexander when he became king.
