Christmas of the Virgin on September 21: folk traditions and signs

September 21 according to the national calendar - Small All-Pure, Oseniny, Ospozhinki. In the Orthodox calendar on this day celebrates the Christmas of the Most Holy Mother of God. In the folk tradition, they met autumn, thanked for the harvest and tried to complete the main field work. Weather and natural phenomena judged what will be the rest of autumn and when the cold will come.

September 21 in folk tradition was considered the time of the final meeting of autumn. By this date, the main field work in many places was already coming to an end, so the peasants arranged festive feasts and thanked the land for the harvest.

Autumn could celebrate a few days. Early in the morning, women went to the river or other body of water, took bread with them and celebrated autumn. After that, family gatherings, treats and festive meetings began.

On this day, we carefully watched the weather, dew, fog and behavior of birds:

The day was suitable for the completion of seasonal work, harvesting and preparing the farm for the cold. Collected vegetables and grain were sent for storage, and the yard and house were put in order.

Autumn was taken to spend in the family circle. On the table put dishes from the new harvest, invited relatives and neighbors, treated each other and thanked for the wealth.

Also, on September 21, it was possible to prepare preparations for the winter, prepare festive meals and help elderly relatives.

According to popular beliefs, on this day they tried not to conflict and not to start clarifying relations. Autumn was considered a time of peace, family harmony and gratitude, so quarrels tried to leave for another day.

Also, according to some beliefs, September 21 was not recommended:

On September 21, Orthodox Christians celebrate the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God, one of the twelve main holidays of the church year.

On this day we remember the birth of the Virgin Mary by Joachim and Anna. According to the church tradition, for a long time the couple had no children, but after prayers they had a daughter, Mary, who was destined to become the Mother of Jesus Christ.

Believers can visit the temple, pray, thank the family and ask for health and well-being for loved ones. The holiday is also considered a suitable time for good deeds, helping those in need and reconciliation with relatives.
