Who is Savvatius Solovetsky

Saint Savvatius lived in the fifteenth century. At first he asceticized in the Kirillo-Belozersky monastery, but, learning about the stricter life of the Baalam monks, he moved there. He amazed the brethren with extraordinary patience and humility, constantly seeking complete solitude and silent prayer.

Eventually he retired to a deserted island in the White Sea, where, together with the monk Herman, he founded a monastery. After his death, other hermits came to the island, and so the Solovetsky monastery appeared, which became one of the main shrines of the Russian North.

Traditions on Savvaty Beeper

The main theme of the day is beekeeping. From October 2 to October 10, the so-called “bee nine days” lasted – a period when beekeepers completed all work with hives and prepared bees for winter.

By this day, the honey had already been collected, and the hostess began to prepare dishes with it. Bake honey gingerbread and rugs, cooked sbiten, added honey to cereals and drinks. It was believed that honey, consecrated on this day, has a special healing power.

The beekeepers tried to finish everything before lunch. After noon, working with hives was considered undesirable - bees could start to worry and not give themselves offense.

On this day, it was customary to treat relatives, neighbors and needy people with honey. It was believed that the more you give, the more you will return, both in business and in health.
