Powerful downpours in the foothills of the Andes provoked a mudflow and large-scale flooding in several areas of Santiago. This was reported on October 8 by the newspaper Clarín.
The most serious situation is in the commune of Las Condes, in the area of San Carlos de Apokindo. Flows of water and mud took to the streets, damaging the city's infrastructure. The element blocked the bus: passengers had to escape on the roof of the vehicle. Water also penetrated medical facilities and other buildings, cars were washed away by the current.
According to preliminary data, the cause of the disaster was the blockage of two drainage channels designed to divert water outside the urban area. Due to overcrowding, a huge stream flooded, causing serious damage to the main streets.
Chile's National Disaster Prevention and Response Service has declared a red alert level for ten municipalities in the capital region. There is a threat of new mudslides and landslides. Residents were urged not to approach rivers and ravines and, if possible, to stay at home.
