In the Murmansk region has prepared a draft resolution that will identify dangerous invasive plants that require special control. The list proposed to include six alien species that can spread throughout the region and affect the local nature. This was reported in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Murmansk region.
In the final list, the specialists of the Polar-Alpine Botanical Garden-Institute named after N. A. Aurorin KSC RAS proposed to include Sosnovsky hogweed, wrinkled rose, nutkan lupin, multi-leafed lupin, iron-bearing and Weirich koenigia.
The list took into account how quickly plants can spread, how they affect local species and ecosystems, whether they pose a danger to humans and whether they can lead to economic consequences.
The most famous example is Sosnovsky’s hogweed. In the Murmansk region, it has already formed large hearths in Murmansk, Apatity, Kirovsk, Kandalaksha and other settlements. The plant spreads rapidly and poses a danger to humans.
If the draft resolution is approved, an official list of species that must be monitored in the region will appear. They will be able to carry out special measures to detect, prevent proliferation and destruction.
A separate list is provided for specially protected natural areas of regional and local importance. The new measures are planned to be applied throughout the Murmansk region, taking into account the requirements of federal legislation.
Earlier, “MK in Murmansk” reported that scientists of the Arctic have created a project to control plants “aliens” in the region.
