Eight people were seriously injured as a passenger airliner Airbus A320 Colombian airline Avianca hit the zone of extreme atmospheric turbulence of clear skies, causing a sharp loss of altitude of almost 25,000 feet (about 7,600 meters). The plane operated a regular night flight from Medellin to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.
Three hours after departure, the aircraft was faced with an unforeseen air anomaly, which led to the fall of people and luggage in the cabin. The crew issued a distress call and made a decision on emergency care for landing at the Miami airport, where the board was already waiting for ambulance crews and resuscitation vehicles.
The victims were taken to hospitals in Florida. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched a technical investigation into the incident.
