Neighboring Russia will tighten children’s access to social networks

In Turkey, from November 1, new rules will begin to apply restricting the stay of minors in social networks. The corresponding document, prepared by the Office for Cybersecurity under the administration of the Turkish leader, was officially published on October 10 in the state journal Resmi Gazete.

According to the text of the decree, from this date, social networks will be prohibited from providing services to users under the age of 15. For adolescents from 15 to 18 years of age, platforms are required to implement a special regime that guarantees an increased level of security and safety of personal data. At the same time, owners of already registered and existing profiles will need to undergo the age confirmation procedure no later than March 31, 2027.

Age verification will be carried out through the national e-Devlet public service system using a unique identifier. User profiles between the ages of 15 and 18 will be closed by default. For this category of citizens, bans are introduced on live broadcasts, the display of targeted advertising and the use of individual algorithms for content selection. In addition, social networks are prohibited from recommending to minors other pages based on the information collected, as well as offering their own profiles to unauthorized users.

Special attention is paid to tightening the protocols of personal safety of young users. Platforms are prohibited from synchronizing children’s accounts with phone directories, contact lists, email address books, and lists of friends and subscriptions in third-party apps and services. The collection and processing of data from these sources are also directly prohibited.

In addition to direct restrictions on minors, the new regulation imposes on social networks the obligation to develop and implement special monitoring tools for parents and legal representatives. With their help, adults will be able to track profile settings, time spent online, geolocation data, the history of financial transactions and other parameters of the child’s account.
