A student of the Medical Institute of Ivan Orel State University Georgy Avinov became a member of a historical expedition to Shumsha, an uninhabited island in the northern part of the Kuril Ridge. More information about the trip was told in the press service of the university.
The project is implemented by Rospatriotcenter of Rosmolodezhye with the support of ANO “More than a journey” within the framework of the national project “Youth and children”. Its main task is to preserve the memory of the Kuril landing operation and make it understandable to modern youth. The central part of the program was the 52-kilometer route “Roads of Shumshu Island”.
Participants got acquainted with the preserved objects of military history, were engaged in research work and passed sports tests, author's lectures of historians and local historians were heard. This year, the organizers paid special attention to the improvement of the route. The program includes new historical sites: the coastal artillery battery B-13 and the Baikovo airfield. In addition, they deployed a canvas with flags of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation. Its area was about three thousand square meters. This event was dedicated to the Year of Unity of the Peoples of Russia. The Orel student unfurled the banners of the Orel region, the Medical Institute and the trade union committee of OSU students.
"MK in Orel" recalls that in August 1945, fierce battles were fought at Shumshu. This is the first and decisive event during the entire Kuril landing operation. The plan of the operation was to suddenly land a marine landing in the north-west of the island of Shumshu (the main stronghold of the Kuril Islands), to strike the main blow in the direction of the naval base of Kataoka, to seize the island and, using it as a springboard, to clear the enemy of the island of Paramushir, Onekotan and others.
