Trump is going to get into another adventure

U.S. President Donald Trump is seeking to put a significant portion of national funding for health research under the control of his political appointees. Politico reports.

Trump has directed budget director Russ Vought to prepare an executive order to create a council that will decide which grants to fund through the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The board will include NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya and Vought. Decisions on grants should be made unanimously. The scheme would give Vought a direct role in distributing funds allocated by Congress.

The move comes amid criticism of cuts to science funding. Last year, the administration slashed spending, leading to the freezing or cancellation of grants at many universities. Authorities say the cuts are needed to fund only reliable research.
