Scientists have named an unexpected way to predict senile weakness by body movements

Scientists from the University of Aix-Marseille proposed to assess the biological age of a person by the complexity of his daily movements. The results of conceptual work that can change the approach to the diagnosis of aging, published the scientific journal Aging. Specialists from the Institute of Motion Sciences have expanded the boundaries of a new discipline - gerophysics, which applies the laws of physics and mathematics to study the processes of withering of the body.

A healthy body is characterized by complex and unpredictable patterns of behavior. For example, the length of steps or the rhythm of breathing in a young person constantly varies, which allows the body to easily adapt to external changes. With age, this variability is lost: movements become either too template or chaotic, signaling a loss of flexibility and reduced adaptive capabilities.

By assessing the so-called complexity reserve, doctors will be able to determine exactly how close a person is to a state of fragility. Fragileness is understood as a sharp decrease in the body's ability to withstand everyday stress. Analysis of changes in gait and other behavioral responses, according to the authors, will help to identify the loss of stability long before the appearance of obvious health problems associated with infirmity. This opens up the possibility for early intervention and prevention when the person still has the resources to maintain an active lifestyle.

Regular exposure to a stimulating environment, such as training with unpredictable obstacles, may help maintain behavioral flexibility into old age. While this concept requires large-scale clinical tests, in the future wearable devices will be able to analyze the patterns of movement of the owner. This approach will prevent the development of frailty years before the onset of irreversible consequences, making aging more active and healthy.
