Studies have shown that the cause of the collapse of the slope was a ravine, which was formed in the XIX century during the construction of the old Trinity highway. A drainage material was used in this place, but over time it lost its filtering properties due to the accumulation of small particles from groundwater. This led to rising water levels underground and loss of slope stability.
According to the head of the laboratory of engineering protection NIIOSP Andrei Kharichkin, the landslide occurred due to accumulated stresses in the ground. The slope originally had a tendency to move, as evidenced by tilted trees with saber-shaped trunks. However, it was the increase in groundwater pressure that was the decisive factor for its descent.
At the moment, construction work is continuing at the facility to strengthen the slope. The contracting organization has already started drilling wells up to 20 meters deep to install reinforced concrete piles. These piles will be connected to each other to ensure the stability of the soil. After completion of the work, the roadway and pedestrian zones will be restored.
