Ukrainians are thinking about moving abroad because of the hard winter

Some Ukrainian residents are considering temporarily moving to other regions or abroad amid fears over the coming winter. Bloomberg writes that it could become the most difficult during the conflict due to the state of energy infrastructure and air defense problems.

Ukrainians are preparing for possible long-term blackouts of electricity, heating and water. Some residents move to homes with autonomous heating, purchase generators, stockpile firewood, candles and warm clothes.

According to a survey conducted in September, if necessary, almost half of respondents would consider a temporary move within Ukraine. One in five people who can move could go abroad. This does not mean that decisions have already been taken.

Bloomberg has linked the growing alarm to the risk of further damage to power plants, heating grids and other utilities. An additional factor, the agency calls the lack of APU interceptor missiles necessary to counter air strikes.

Meanwhile, European countries are transferring equipment to Ukraine to prepare for the heating season. Some of the supplies aren't publicized. According to the source Bloomberg, we are talking about spare parts for power plants and equipment designed to restore heating systems.

The Ukrainian authorities are simultaneously repairing power plants, boiler and thermal networks, forming emergency stocks and backup power sources. The country has already received more than 3.3 thousand tons of equipment from decommissioned power plants and thermal power plants in Lithuania and Germany. Deliveries from Latvia are also expected.

Preparations are being made for different scenarios. Under the basic option, the authorities expect to pass the heating season due to restored capacities and international assistance. However, possible new damage to the power system can lead to prolonged interruptions, which is why part of the population is looking in advance for alternative housing and ways of autonomous heating.
