A complex reconstructive operation was carried out by a resident of Ulyanovsk, who had squamous cell cancer of the mucous membrane of the left cheek. After removal of the tumor, a significant defect formed, and surgeons used the patient's own tissue from the anterior abdominal wall to repair it.
The first alarming symptoms of the man noticed after the May holidays. He was worried about discomfort in his mouth, so he went to a doctor in Ulyanovsk. Subsequent examination and biopsy confirmed the malignant neoplasm.
The treatment started with chemotherapy. The patient underwent three courses in Ulyanovsk, after which the tumor decreased, but did not completely disappear. For the surgical stage of treatment, the man went to Kazan, to the Republican Clinical Oncology Dispensary.
During the operation, the tumor was removed along with the adjacent tissues. After such an intervention, a large defect in the cheek remained, which had to be closed to repair the damaged area.
Usually, other parts of the body can be used for such reconstructions, but in this case, doctors found signs of circulatory disorders in the areas of standard tissue sampling. So I had to choose another option.
To restore the cheek, surgeons took a DIEP flap from the anterior abdominal wall - a section of the patient's own tissue along with the vessels feeding it. Then, using microsurgical technique, the vessels of the transplanted tissue were connected to the vessels in the neck.
The reconstruction was successful: the transplanted tissues took root. After the operation, the man recovered and has already returned home.
