The cause of death was not specified. According to journalists, about two weeks before his death, Gomez was hospitalized due to breathing problems.
Gomez was born on October 29, 1956. In 1972, he competed in the Olympics as an amateur boxer, and two years later became world champion.
During his professional career, the athlete performed in three weight categories: the second lightest, featherweight and second featherweight. He won the WBA and WBC championship belts, and held the title in the 55.2 kg category for almost six years, defending him 17 times by knockout.
In total, Gomez scored 44 victories, including 42 knockouts. He also had three losses and one draw.
